I panic then,
because I can't speak
without t r i p p i n g over my words and taking
thrice as long to get the sentiment
across.
And it fills me with a sudden rage and hatred at Him
for taking that away from me.
Pulling away, I smile tentatively.
'I miss you, too.' I sign, hoping desperately
for Zaina to understand.
Realization seems to dawn on her,
her eyes go wide and her smile falters-
"Oh yeah, I almost forgot."
And I brace myself-
But then she lifts her hands,
"I'm not great at this but-"
she signs something that I can't really make out,
"did you get that?"
I shake my head,
I don't understand but the warmest feeling
washes over me-
I grin and shrug,
eyes glittering and alight,
"It's okay, thank you for trying,"
I say.
