I always saw masquerade parties as celebrations of reality

I always saw masquerade parties as celebrations of reality. You know, where people wear masks to hide who they really are. It's a sad truth. No one really knows who anyone is. Sometimes I wish I could take off my mask and show who I really am. But instead, tonight, I will wear a sparkling white mask that matches my dress and hides my identity.

I was in my friend Marcia's car. We were on our way to Evie's house for her masquerade party.

We were crashing it.

"I can't believe we are crashing Evie's party." I looked in the mirror to check my face.

Marcia laughed. "I know right?! I'm so excited!"

I closed the mirror and turned to her. "I know but she only invited the popular kids. We are average people and not her friends. As soon as she sees us, she'll kick us out." I shook my head and looked down at my lap.

"Look, it's on my bucket list to crash a party. We are wearing masks, so she won't say a thing." She held up her gold mask that she didn't put on yet. "Just relax. Tonight is not the night to worry about our social status. Tonight is the night to have fun." Marcia cheered as she parked her car.

We both got out of the car and walked a few house down. We gazed up at the huge, glowing mansion in front of us. "Wow!" Marcia and I said at the same time.

Marcia put on her mask and grinned. "A little party never killed nobody." She linked her arm with mine and ran us into the house.

The place was beautiful. The main hall had twinkling lights everywhere. There were speakers in every room so people could dance everywhere.

I followed Marcia to the backyard where we saw people diving into a glowing pool. There were chandeliers and fancy drinks everywhere. I was amazed.

"Would you like to dance?!" I heard someone yell over the music. I saw a good looking guy standing in front of me. I smiled and blushed... until I realized he wasn't talking to me. He was talking to Marcia.

She bit her lip and looked to me for approval. I forced a smile and nodded. She walked away to the dance floor with the guy, leaving me all alone.

I let out a deep breath and gazed around. While everyone was smiling and dancing, I just stood there with my fingers twiddling together.

I turned around to look back at the house. I saw an empty balcony on the second story which looked comfortable compared to the crowd around me. I made my way through the crowd and through the house to the balcony.

I finally made it to the balcony doors. I opened them only to be amazed. The sound from the music wasn't so loud, so that was good. Also, you could actually see all of the stars in the sky. I leaned my arms and head against the railing, staring up at them with a grin.

I heard the door open behind me followed by a cough. I got up and looked behind me. It was an attractive guy I've never seen before. Well, maybe I have seen him before. I don't know. He's wearing a mask too. "Oh, I'm sorry. I just needed some fresh air and a little alone time. I didn't know there was anyone up here." He awkwardly shrugged and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

"Looks like we had the same idea. It's truly beautiful up here." I motioned my hand around to show him the area.

"Yeah it is. My cousin Evie just got this built. So glad she did." He walked over to me. I gulped when he said that he was Evie's cousin. He held out his hand to me. "Ralph."

"Y/n." I shook his hand.

"How do you know Evie?" He cocked his head to me. I think I just gulped again.

My eyes went wide as I tried to think of an excuse. "Uh, Evie and I are good friends. We go shopping together all of the time."

He raised his eyebrows. "Really?"

"Mmmhmm." I hummed with confidence.

He leaned close to my ear. "You know... Evie hates shopping. So who are you really?"

I cursed at myself for not finding a good excuse. "Truth is, I snuck into this party with my friend."

He was serious for a moment until he led himself into a laughing fit. "What is wrong with you? What's so funny?" I furrowed my eyebrows.

He managed to make out a few words while still laughing. "Me too."

"What?"

"I snuck into this party too. I lied. I don't know Evie. Hell, I don't know anyone at this party."

My jaw fell as my cheeks turned red in embarrassment. I whacked his shoulder a few times. "You jerk!"

Ralph grabbed my hands. "Calm down. I was only joking."

"Well that wasn't very nice nor funny." I pulled my hands from his grip and turned away from him.

"Come on, don't be like that. Let's start over. My name is Ralph."

I scoffed. "Are you sure it's Ralph or are you lying about that too?" I glared back at him over my shoulder.

He rolled his eyes. Before he could say anything else, the crazy new wave music turned into a slow song. The DJ said something about couples but I couldn't make out what it was. I looked over the ledge and saw Marcia taking off her mask and making out with that guy from before. I reached up and felt my mask. I forgot I still had it on.

"Looks like we've both been lying tonight." Ralph said as he took off his mask. I knew it. He is really handsome. "Like I said, let's start over. My name's Ralph, this is what I look like, I snuck into this party, I think you're gorgeous and I want to dance with you." His face softened.

I pressed my lips together in thought before I nodded. "Okay." I reached towards the back of my head to untie the mask.

Ralph reached up to stop me. "Allow me." He grabbed the ribbon and untied it. The mask slowly slid off of my face. He looked surprised and happy. "Gorgeous."

He placed my arms around his neck and placed his hands on my waist. We slowly spun around to the soft music in the background. I pulled him in closer and rested my face on his chest. I gazed up at the stars again, grinning as Ralph and I danced the night away.
