Reality is an illusion, and to say so isn't really controversial. Our perception of 'reality' is
through frankly chitty sensory apparatus with limited frame of reference. Our peception
of light is a merest fragment of the radiation spectrum, for example. Our experience of
the world which surrounds us is and always will be severely limited.
We can approach this notion philosophically because we're self-aware and can form
concepts such as 'reality'. But our limited frame of reference is an insurmountable
obstacle to actually answering your question.
This is one of the reasons human beings lead such rich internal lives - it's not enough
to see a sunrise and go 'wow, such colour, very beauty'... we express higher-order
thoughts through painting and writing about it, not through simply seeing. Through
art we can see the differences in people's own perceptions of the signals their sensory
apparatus give them.
