Chapter Two

After taking two flights of stairs, we arrive at a door labeled 2C. Melanie pulls out a set of keys and unlocks the door.

“I’m sorry about the mess. I haven’t really cleaned up the place in a while. I’ve been kind of busy these past few weeks.”

She walks in and turns on the lights. I trail in behind her, taking in the view. We walk into, what I assume to be, the living room. Children’s toys scatter all over the floor, and dirty plates and cupscrowd the small table that lays in front of a couch. A small TV is placed against the far wall.

“I know that it’s not much,” Melanie shrugs, “but it is home.”

It looks like more of a home than mine ever was.

“Come on. I’ll give you a tour.”

Melanie takes me around the decent sized apartment, stopping along the way to pick up clothes that are thrown on the floor. She kicks a few toys out of the way and leads me down the hall.

Why are there toys here in the first place?

“I should just hire a maid or someone to clean this place up. Anyway, down here are three bedrooms and one bathroom. They’re not that big, but they’re suitable.”

Three bedrooms? Why does she even need three bedrooms?

Before I can ask her why she has so many bedrooms, shes already heading back through the main room and to the kitchen.

“You must be starving,” she says, rummaging through the fridge.

To be honest, we had been so busy that I forgot about my own hunger. But since she brought it up, my stomach starts to grumble.

“I really am hungry, actually.”

“Great; we can have a little late night snack. Anything in particular?” she asks me as she pulls out a tub of vanilla ice cream with hot fudge.

I shake my head, eyeing the ice cream with delightful eyes.

“Anything would be perfect right now. Thanks.”

She hands me a bowl, and I probably devour it in less than one minute.

With my stomach completely full - and on the verge of bursting - my eyes start to slowly shut. This day has been hectic and pretty crazy; who knew a long ride on a bus plus working a late shift could be so overwhelming.

“Oh my gosh - you must be so tired!”

I wave my hand dismissively. “I’m… fine - honest.”

“I will make up the bed in the guest room for you, so you can get a good nights sleep. We have a long shift tomorrow, and since it’s a Friday, it will be pretty packed.

“Great,” I say, my voice coarse and barely above a whisper. “Sounds good.”

At this point, I am leveling dreamland and consciousness. My brain wasn’t exactly functioning, but I could still sense things. I could tell that I am being moved somewhere - I just didn’t know where.

Before I had time to ask, my face hits the cushions of a soft pillow and I close my eyes, drifting off into sleep.

I wake up to the smell of bacon consuming my surroundings. The aroma rendering my senses to overdrive.

I get that feeling where you are just so hungry, you feel like your stomach is eating itself. I also regret eating that bowl of ice cream last night. My stomach is clawing itself from the lack of actual food.
