Chapter Eleven
What to wear?
That is the question on every girl’s mind as they prepare for a date. Most girls spend hours upon hours picking an outfit out. Then after that, they still spend hours perfecting their makeup and hair. All that for a date that only lasts an hour or two.
But for me, I don’t really care.
Chris is a nice guy and I’m looking forward to tonight, but I don’t want stress out over what to wear. I just want to be comfortable. Plus, I don’t think I would want to go out with someone if they judged me by the clothes I wear.
So here I am - on the couch wearing a pair of light-washed jeans and a loose dark blue tank top. I wasn’t sure where the date was, so I dressed in simplicity. You can never go wrong with jeans.
It’s just past three and I’m watching some random television. The room is silent except for the sound of the TV and the cars zooming by outside. It’s relaxing - a sound that I could easily fall asleep to.
That is until I hear the faint sound of a familiar tune. By the strumming and picking patterns, I know who it is immediately. The guitar playing hasn’t been around for weeks now, and I can’t help but mute the television to listen.
I close my eyes and nearly let myself get lost in the music. Then, my phone starts ringing. I ignore the first few rings, and then it starts ringing rapidly. Getting exasperated with the loud noise disturbing the enchanting melody, I answer the phone with a groan.
“Hello?” I don’t mean to answer with such a bitter tone.
“Addy?”
I sigh at the familiar voice, “Hey Mel.”
“Are you okay? You answered kind of harshly.”
“Oh, yeah. I’m fine.”
The line was silent for a few moments before she finally answered, “I wanted to see what you were doing today. Julian is going to be picking up Micah soon, and I was thinking of going out tonight with some of the people from work.”
I smile to myself, “Well, actually I have plans tonight with someone…”
“Plans as in…?” she trails off, voice sounding hopeful.
“I’m going on a date.”
A small screech sounds on the other end of the phone, “Oh my gosh; I knew it! I mean, Dan told me that he didn’t have the guts, but clearly I was right!”
What did Dan have to do with any of this? Who is he?
“What the h*ll are you talking about?” I ask her, confused.
Melanie doesn’t reply for a while, “Wait… who are you going out with?”
“I’m going out with Chris tonight,” I tell her. “Who are you talking about?”
I swear that I hear her mutter curse words and something along the lines of being an idiot, but she sighs before I can question anything else.
“No one. It’s not even important,” the tone in her voice suggests that I just leave it be, so I shrug it off.
“Okay. Well, anyway, I’m sorry that I can’t go out with you guys.”
A hint of sadness graces Melanie’s tone, “It’s okay. You go have fun with, uh, Chris…”
Why did she sound upset about Chris and I going out tonight?
