Chapter 12

12/07/84

Max climbed trough Lucas' window trying not to wake him up. That failed.
"Max?" He asked while squeezing his eyes.
"Stalker" She said like it was nothing while taking of her jacket.
"What are you doing here?" He asked with a raspy voice.
"Getting some sleep" Max said.
"Wow wow wow" Lucas said.
"What?" Max asked.
"I've just...never slept in the same bed as a girl before " Lucas said.
"Well there's a first time to everything" She said and walked towards Lucas' bed. His eyes opened widely. "Move over"
"I'm not wearing a shirt" Lucas said.
"Does that make you unable to move over?" Max asked.
"No" Lucas said.
"Alright then...move over" he moved to leave room for her and she laid down. He turned so he laid on his back and tried not to be awkward. "Lucas?" She said after a while.
"Yeah?" He asked.
"Can you come closer?" She asked. He hesitated a bit but then moved close enough so their skin was touching. "Is this okay?" She asked when she put her head down on his chest and put her hand on his shoulder. He couldn't help but shiver. In a good way. Really good way.
"Max what happened?" Lucas asked tucking a little bit of Max's hair behind her ear.
"What do you mean?" Max asked even though she knew exactly.
"You never come home to me in the middle of the night and want to sleep in my bed with me. What happened?" Lucas repeated.
"Nothing" Max said. Lucas could feel her warm breath against his chest.
"I know that's a lie" Lucas said.
"I just...I don't want to talk about it" Max said.
"Max-"
"Just drop it" She said. "It's nothing you have to care about"
"But-"
"Drop it" Max said again.
"Okay..." he said but he couldn't help but think that something really bad happened. "You know you can tell me anything, right?"
"Yes" Max said. "But not this"
"Why?"
"Lucas, drop it" Max repeated with an annoyed voice.
"Did I do something?" Lucas asked.
"Would I be here if you'd done something?" Max asked.
"No...did Billy do something?" Lucas asked.
"Lucas please, drop it" Max said.
"But I wanna help you" Lucas said.
"I'm sorry Lucas but you can't help me with this" Max said. It was just now he realized the wet spot on his chest just under her head.
"Are you crying?" Lucas asked.
"No" Max said and dried up the tears left on her cheek.
"Max I'm really worried now" Lucas said and sat up so his back was against the wall.
"Don't be. It's fine. I'm fine." Max said. "Just hold me" he laid back down again so they were in the same position as before.
"I really like you Mad Max bu-" Lucas started but was cut off by Max.
"I really like you too Stalker" She said. Lucas decided to leave it at that.
"Goodnight, Max" Lucas said.
"Goodnight, Stalker" Max said. Lucas gave her a kiss on her head and drifted off to sleep. But Max was fully awake. She couldn't sleep. Even though the arms of her boyfriend comforted her she couldn't let go of the thought of what happened earlier that night. Her eyes got red and her body felt numb. She really wanted to go to sleep.
'Please just go to sleep' she thought to herself. But her brain didn't listen. The pictures of Billy entering her room, drunk, and unbuttoned his pants and- no. She wasn't going to think about it. But she couldn't stop. The memory just kept playing on repeat. All night. She couldn't fall asleep.

"Lucas" Max said to wake him up. She was already dressed and ready to leave.
"Huh?" He asked with his eyes wide open.
"I'm going" Max said. She was kneeling down beside him. She had big dark rings under her eyes.
"Why?" He asked.
"I don't think your mom would be happy finding a girl sleeping in your bed" Max said. "And my family would kill me"
"Stay a little while" Lucas said and reached out for her hand. She took it.
"I can't" she said. "We'll meet in school"
"But I can't kiss and hug you in school" Lucas said. She was a little surprised when he said that. They didn't really have the kind of relationship where they kissed and hugged a lot. They manly just smiled at each other.
"Would you want to?" Max asked.
"I mean... yeah" he said.
"Oh well. Too bad for you" She said mockingly right before giving him a passionate kiss.
"I want more of those" Lucas said. "At least once a day"
"We'll see" Max said and smirked and then kissed him again. "Well...I'm going now" she stood up but was stopped by his hand on hers.
"No wait. One more" he said.
"Bye Stalker" She said and he let go of her hand. She climbed out the window and he fell back to sleep.
