Dolores returned later that afternoon looking a lot calmer than when she had stormed out of the house; she smiled politely as she looked at her son’s fiancée.

Nicole looked at Cristiano who shrugged as he disappeared to with Antony to watch a football match; he knew that whatever had calmed his mother down was not meant to be messed with, she would come around when she was ready.

Nicole sighed as she left her fiancé to watch the match before she headed into the kitchen were Dolores was preparing dinner; she swallowed as she wondered what the other woman had done to calm herself down so quickly.

“I was thinking, it was wrong of me to presume that you’d want to be married in a catholic church in Portugal,” Dolores said making Nicole look at her concerned, she had a feeling that the older woman didn’t complete understand what Cristiano had been trying to tell her.

It was clear that Dolores was in denial about her son not wanting to get married in a church.

“So I started looking at catholic churches in Italy and here in Madrid,” Dolores said beaming at Nicole, who looked slightly stunned; she wasn’t quite sure how to comment on what the other woman had said.

Nicole nodded in silence before she quickly excused herself making Dolores frown as the brunette slipped into the living room to speak with Cristiano; she knew someone had to talk with Dolores about her wedding plans.

“She’s looking at catholic churches in Italy and here in Madrid now,” Nicole said knowing even if they did reconsider having their wedding at a church, it wasn’t going to be a catholic one.

Cristiano sighed as Nicole sat down next to him, he thought after their talk this morning his mother had understood that they didn’t want a church wedding at all.

“I’ll talk to her,” Cristiano promised Nicole as he turned his attention back to the television, they had decided it would be easier for him to tell his mother about what they had planned for their big day.

Dolores walked into the living room holding more brochures for churches in her hands, she knew that this would get the couple excited about their big day if nothing else did; she remembered her own wedding and how happy she had been back then.

Nicole looked at Cristiano who sighed and handed her Antony before he turned his attention to Dolores, he knew he’d have to sort this out now so that she wouldn’t be upset later on; he wanted everything to work out for his wedding day to Nicole.

“Mãe… you do remember what we discussed this morning?” the footballer asked while Nicole cooed softly to Antony, she knew that her future mother-in-law was going to be far from pleased about what was about to happen.

The last thing the couple wanted was to upset anyone with their wedding, however they had thought long and hard about this and they didn’t want to marry in a church.

“I know but what’s more personal than being married before God in a church,” Dolores said smiling making Cristiano look at her, she was in complete denial about what he wanted and he hoped that it wouldn’t come to this.

Dolores looked at her son confused about what he wanted, she had been so sure that the couple would love that she had started to look elsewhere for a church for them to marry in.

“I just don’t see why you suddenly don’t want to get married in a catholic ceremony in a catholic church?” Dolores said making Nicole sigh knowing she might as well come out with the truth, she knew that the older woman wasn’t going to like what happened next.

“Dolores we don’t want a catholic wedding because we don’t want to upset anyone,” the brunette said as her fiancé looked at her, he took her hand knowing what she was about to do and he knew his mother wasn’t going to like it.

Dolores looked at Nicole wondering what she was talking about, she couldn’t help but wonder why anyone would be upset if the couple married in a catholic church.

“Why would both of you upset anyone with a catholic wedding?” Dolores asked watching Cristiano wrap an arm around the brunette, she didn’t like where this was going and she knew that there was something that her son hadn’t told her about what was going on.

“My family and I are Protestants,” Nicole said as Cristiano looked at his mother, he could tell that she wasn’t pleased with what she had heard and he didn’t want her taking it out on Nicole; he loved the brunette and he didn’t care if she wasn’t catholic.

Dolores sat quietly for a few minutes taking in what Nicole said before she frowned and turned on Cristiano; she couldn’t believe that he had done this to her.

“Why couldn’t you choose a nice catholic girl?” Dolores snapped making Cristiano frown at her as Nicole murmured softly to their son keeping him distracted from his angry grandmother; she didn’t want him to see the fallout.

Cristiano had warned Nicole that Dolores wouldn’t take it well when they finally told her that the brunette was protestant and not catholic; Dolores had always wanted her family to remain purely catholic and expected each of their children to have catholic families.

Cristiano watched as his mother started to rant in Portuguese before he interrupted her, he wasn’t going to allow her to bad mouth his relationship with Nicole; he was determined to make his relationship work with the brunette.

“Mãe, I love Nicole and I want to spend the rest of my life with her. As far as I’m concerned we’re both Christians; I’m not catholic and she’s not protestant… we’re both just Christians and that’s how we’ll raise our family,” Cristiano said making Nicole smile up at him as he held her closer.

He looked down at his son knowing that religion didn’t matter to him as much as it did to others.

The footballer still practiced his religion and he had never forced anyone to convert for him, he wouldn’t do it to Nicole knowing that religion wasn’t going to be a big problem for them in any way.

Dolores pursed her lips before grabbing her bag and turning to glare at Nicole, she couldn’t believe that her son had gone against her like this; she just wanted her family to be together completely in every way.

“When you come to your senses come home until then don’t expect me to be involved with this… this sham,” Dolores said as she got to her feet, she couldn’t bring herself to look at her youngest son as she stormed out of the house leaving the couple behind.

Cristiano buried his head into Nicole’s neck while his arms wrapped around her and Antony; holding his family close to him, they were all that matter.

Nicole settled Antony on the footballer’s lap and held him close, she rubbed his back trying to sooth him knowing that this couldn’t be easy for him; his mother meant a lot to him and had always been there for him.

“It’ll be okay,” the brunette said trying to reassure him, she wasn’t sure what they would do now that Dolores had walked out like that and she hated that she was causing problems for him like this; she sighed as Cristiano nodded his head.

“It doesn’t matter… I have all I need right here,” the footballer said making Nicole smile at him as the two sat quietly in their living room, he knew that he wasn’t going to choose to leave the brunette

They had a son together and he didn’t think he would survive another separation from her.
