Noah

Her eyebrows furrow.

(Hailey) "Nolan? The guy that did my mom's heart transplant?"

I nod a little and a smile starts growing on her beautiful lips.

(Hailey) "Is she awake? Is she alright? Can I see her?!"

(Noah) "The heart wasn't strong enough for your mother..."

Her smile falls and she stays frozen for a little while until she snaps back to reality.

(Hailey) "Does that mean she has to wait for another heart? Maybe if we go back to the black market we can find one suita-"

(Noah) "Hailey, your mom died."

She shuts her mouth and stays frozen again. I put my hands on her shoulders but she doesn't even blink. She just looks at me.

(Noah) "I'm so sorry..."

She still doesn't react. I look for Cole for some help but his mouth is hung opened and I can see his eyes pooled in tears.

He was really close to Amanda...

(Noah) "Hail, you okay?" – I ask after a minute of silence.

She raises her hand, lifting one finger like she wants me to give her a minute and with the other hand, she covers her mouth, walking to the other side of the road where are bushes. She bends over and throws up everything she ate today. I jog to her and hold back her hair.

(Noah) "Let it out, baby girl..." – I whisper.

Some seconds later, when she's done, I give her a paper tissue and she wipes her mouth with it. She stands straight and I can see her hands shaking.

(Hailey) "I'm sorry you had to see that."

(Noah) "You don't need to worry about that. Are you okay?"

(Hailey) "Yeah..." – she nods. – "Can we go home, please?" – she still doesn't look into my eyes.

(Noah) "Of course..." – I whisper.

We walk back to where Cole is.

(Cole) "How're you feeling?"

Hailey doesn't say anything to him and just gets inside my car, on the passenger side.

(Cole) "You're taking her home?"

(Noah) "Yeah..." – I lift my eyes from her to him. – "You should go home too."

He shakes his head.

(Cole) "I think I'm gonna see my girlfriend..." – he sniffs, trying to contain his tears.

I pat his shoulder and he walks inside with his hands in his pockets and his head hung low. I get in the driver side and look at her.

She's not crying... She's just staring at her hands in shock... Which concerns me a lot more than if she was crying her eyes out...

I start the car and drive away.

I don't know if I should say something... I don't know what to do. I've never been in this situation before...

I keep driving, often glancing at her, but she's still frozen.

(Noah) "Hail?" – I ask quietly.

She lifts her gaze from her hands to my eyes and I park the car on the side of the road so I can give her my attention.

(Hailey) "She's dead..." – she whispers.
