"I have to go. See you tomorrow." Archer hangs up without waiting for me to say anything.

I'm frozen in shock as I stare at my home screen.

What just happened?

Archer and Kit are...siblings?

But they look nothing alike!

They're not even the same skin color!

Oh.

He just "moved here."

He was adopted.

My thumbs itch to call him back, but I don't. I'll wait to talk to him tomorrow.

"Kendra! Dinner!"

I unintentionally stomp down the stairs.

Mom looks up. "Kendra? Can we talk?" I look down at her from the last step.

"Sure..." I trail off quietly.

"So, I've noticed you've been in your room a lot lately. You're always talking. Is there something wrong at school?" Worry lines crinkle around her eyes as I stutter.

"No...no! There's- there isn't anything...!"

"Are you sure?" She's giving me that I-can-and -will-see-through-your-every-thought kind of look. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you have a very nice, not crazy mom.

"I've just been FaceTiming my friend. There's nothing wrong."

"Who's your friend?"

How can she possibly know everything?

"I just met them..."

"Them?"

"Him" I say "yes, it's a guy." I roll my eyes.

"Mom, just because I have a friend who happens to be a guy, that doesn't mean we're dating and we can become your OTP."

"My what?"

I shake my head. "Never mind. Can we eat now?" She nods, walking into the kitchen.
                            __________

I slam my locker hastily and run to English, even though I'm always early. I need to talk to Archer.

I sit down quickly and fold my hands awkwardly, then place them on my lap, wondering why I even did that in the first place.
