Chapter 8 - Him

So the first thing she said when she saw me was to confirm if I really was the one who helped her.

I could hear the sincerity in her voice, but a part of me pushed me to confirm it one last time before I let myself be convinced of her innocence.

The indignant look she gave me and the forceful shaking of her head as she denied recognizing me seemed quite real, and I finally let myself believe it.

She reminded me of her panicked state when I saw her yesterday, and I laughed softly at the memory.

Her eyes widened when she heard me laugh and I saw that familiar smile, again transforming her whole look.

I saw Dana stifle a chuckle at the weird way this woman recognized me, by my laugh, of all things. I scowled in annoyance.

I wouldn't say I'm a vain person, but I have somehow gotten used to random strangers knowing me and treating me special because my looks. My ego took a surprising hit because of the way Olivia reacted to me.

She didn't remember anything about how I looked at all.

I heard Dana start explaining the situation to her and I decided to butt in.

"Wait a minute. I'm still not fully convinced she had nothing to do with it," I told them just to get back at her.

She turned to look at me and I tried to stare her down, but she seemed to have gotten over the initial shock of meeting me because she just stared right back as she demanded an explanation.

I let Dana deal with the details and took the opportunity to study her. She was a weird one, that much I could say. Since I our first meeting, she had never reacted the way I expected her to and always caught me by surprise.

She is an intriguing woman, and I found myself liking the idea of having her as my personal assistant. With her around, I think my life would be less boring.

"We still have a problem," I heard Dana say and Olivia looked at both of us blankly.

I told her about the papparazzi and how easy it was to find out information about her, spicing things up here and there to scare her a little.

But again, her reaction surprised me. While people are lining up to get any sort of connection with me, she turned down our offer without a second thought. She even looked horrified at the prospect.

Is she stupid or what? Doesn't she realize what a great opportunity this is for her?

I frowned as she glared at me as if it's my fault this was all happening to her. Granted, it partly was, but it's not as if she's being punished for it.

We're offering her a job, for god's sake! A high paying one at that. And from what I've heard about her current position, what we're offering in an upgrade several times over.

If she wasn't bright enough to recognize a golden opportunity being served to her on a platter, then maybe she shouldn't be my assistant after all.

As soon as she left, Dana turned to me with a frown.

"What was that all about? I haven't seen you act like this before."
