Chapter 3: The secret is out

Sawyer: 15
Atlas: 17

Sawyer and Atlas sprinted down the hallways running to the medical center. Atlas abruplty stopped making both of them stumble as they turned into the medical center. "Where is she?" Atlas yelled breathing heavily as the 2 looked around. "In here!" Meredith called out as she poked her head out from behind a curtain 

Sawyer and Atlas ran over, Atlas slid the curtain back and the 2 teens slipped in. Their hearts dropped as they saw Cara laying on the table, wires connected to her. Cara was laying there almost lifeless on the bed. She looked so tired and pale, her eyes were closed and at the sound of Atlas's voice she opened her eyes slowly

"Mom" Atlas choked out as he moved to her side.  Tears fell from Sawyer's eyes and she bit her lip trying to control her emotions

"Hey baby" Cara coughed out. Atlas was sobbing as he held his mothers hand "You're gonna be ok Mama" Atlas cried while he stroked her hair. Meredith sobbed as she stood on Cara's other side. Sawyer walked over to her Mother and hugged her 

"You listen to me boy-" Cara gulped as she tried to hide her pain "You promise me, that you go that you next week you go that guard ceremony and you get that promotion" Cara said. Her voice was trembling

"I promise, I'll do good" Atlas said. Suddenly everything in the room started beeping. What happened next happened so fast that if you ask anyone they would just say it was all a blur 

Meredith jumped in shock, Cara's body went into a shock and she stopped moving. Atlas was screaming and Sawyer stood there in shock while Meredith started pumping on her best friend's chest 

"No, no, no" Meredith sobbed

The monitor stopped before releasing a long beep 

She flat lined 

Atlas screamed and started shaking his Mother "No! Mom! No! Please. Mommy I need you" he cried. Sawyer choked on her tears as she ran over to Atlas. She pulled the broken boy into her arms 

He broke down sobbing on her and Sawyer's gaze stood on Cara's body while she held her son tight. Meredith was on the floor sobbing 

"C'mon Atlas" Sawyer said as she tried to walk her friend out of the room. "No! No i'm not leaving her" Atlas said shaking his head as he tried to fight Sawyer 

"Atlas! She's gone! We need to go" Sawyer screamed as she was pulling him out of the room. "No! Mom!" Atlas screamed. Sawyer dragged the devastated teen out of the room. She knew that Atlas shouldn't be sitting in the room staring at her body 

Outside of the curtains Atlas broke down onto the floor. Sawyer pulled him in and rocked him back and forth in the hallway while he cried 

"You're gonna be ok" Sawyer cried as she ran her fingers through his hair to calm him down "It's gonna hurt but you are gonna get through this" She said biting her lip
