Want

Melody's POV

Mid-December

"Now what is it?" My dad asked as he entered the kitchen. I glared at him. Every damn week I've been getting packages. From who? From Chris of course. I'm angry but I also feel like my walls are cracking every time something comes in. I look down at the new package. Every gift has sentimental value to it.

"Hot chocolate mix and a book." I said. By my favorite author.

"That's nice." He replied. I shrugged.

Last week he got me a frame - one made specifically for Micah's portrait. A beautiful soul is never forgotten. I wept for hours after receiving it. My dad wasn't too happy about that gift due to the state it put me in.

Two weeks ago I received a gift of things for Buddy. Toys, snacks, a Christmas outfit, and a new collar for him.

Three weeks ago was when it all started. The famous white roses.

"Have you talked to him?" My dad asked. I gritted my teeth.

"No." I said bitterly. My dad nodded looking unbothered by my reaction. I threw the book on the table refusing to read it... when in reality all I want to do is start reading it as I sip on my hot chocolate. It's perfect for this weather. It's freezing and it's raining.

"Want me to warm up some milk?" My dad asked. I stayed quiet. Yes, I wanted to say, but my pride was getting in the way. Didn't I want this? Didn't I want Chris? I shook my head.

"I'm fine, I'm going out." I said. My phone began vibrating soon after I said it. Jess. Yes, perfect timing! "Hello?" I answered. I heard yelling/squealing on the other side causing me to put the phone away from my ear. "Whoa, what's going on?" I asked.

"Guess what?" She asked sounding happy. I heard Daniel in the background talking ecstatically.

"Did you guys get the house?!" I asked excited. She laughed.

"Yes that's one part, there's another part to it." She said.

"Oh my god, congratulations! I'm so happy for you guys. Wait what else is there?" I asked.

"They got the house? Good for them." My dad said.

"I'm pregnant!" She said. My heart felt like it fell. I don't know what facial reaction I gave but my dad was automatically on alert. Jess continued talking but I could no longer hear what she was saying. My phone slipped out of my hands and fell to the ground. My hand went limp to my side. A fog built around me. I could feel the numbness begin creeping into my body. I felt like my breath was knocked out of me.

"Melody!" I heard my dad say, but it was muffled. It wasn't until he shook me that I began coming back to reality. I looked around, taking in my surroundings. "What's wrong? Are you okay? Tell me what's wrong." My dad babbled. I swallowed.

"I'm fine." I said, but it came out monotone. "Umm, I have to go meet up with Jess. I'll be back." I said. I picked up my phone hurriedly, hitting the end button to the call.

"Wait. Melody, you can't leave like this." He said disapprovingly. "Why don't you have her come over?"

"It's fine dad. I'm fine. Jess got the house and she's pregnant. I'll be back." I said gathering my belongings and heading out.

"Melody!" He called out as I left.

I don't know where I'm going. I'm not meeting up with Jess. There's no way I'm meeting up with her right now. I can't. My phone began vibrating. Jess. I put it on silent as I entered the elevator. I closed my eyes trying to process everything. I need air.
