THE GOOD LIFE

MY EYES FLICKED open at the repetitive thumping sound overhead, I sighed deeply and tried to keep myself from getting irritated. Carl was just trying to get to grips with his injury. Nevertheless, being woken up every morning because of the same monotonous bangs starts to make you go slightly insane. With a groan, I lifted my head and moved my pillow to smother my loud cursing. Rick and Michonne had the same idea, shouting for Carl to stop. With a sigh of relief, I moved the pillow back where it belonged and attempted to go back to sleep.

However, I was barely able to even try as loud knocks echoed around my room. I grunted as I ran my hands down my face, turning to glare at whoever decided to disturb him this early. Enid lent around the door with a cheeky smile, throwing a granola bar at me as she giggled.

"Wake up, lazy shit" she muttered, crossing her arms.

"Watch your mouth kid" I shot back, jokingly glaring at her as she scoffed.

"I'll be outside" she said before looking around my room with a disgusted face "You need to tidy up"

She closed the door behind her as she left, leaving me to get ready for a training session. Sitting up on my bed, I yawned as I looked around my room. It wasn't even that bad, the room had been messier. I took my time getting ready, knowing it would annoy Enid further. Pulling my top down over my body, another couple of knocks sounded from my door again.

"Tuck?" Dad asked from the other side before slowly opening the door, leaning against the frame as he looked at my room with a frown.

"What's up?" I asked, sitting down onto my bed to pull on my boots and tie them up.

"Rick and I are headin' out" Dad said, picking at his nails. I could tell he wanted to have success this time.  Dad and Rick where going out for a run, still trying to find more food that we needed. The pantry was running dangerously low, far too empty for the amount of people we had in the community. They needed to return with something this time, we depended on it.

"'ight, don't do anything stupid" I joked, picking up the granola and opening it up.

"Right back at you" Dad scoffed, taking a second before he left to motion to my room before he left "Tidy your fuckin' room"

The streets were quiet that early morning as I walked towards the patch of grass I trained at.  I frowned as I got closer, not seeing Enid or any of the things set up that we needed. She'd woken me up early but had vanished when I was ready to train with her, this kid would be the death of me. Hearing giggling, I turned around the see Enid and Carl whispering to each other, standing close together like no one could see them. It was clear to the lot of us that there was something between them, only they didn't see it.

Upon seeing them I began to remember how I felt around Noah... The lightness and the feeling of being invincible. The happiness - that I hadn't felt since that day. It was Glenn who told me how Nicholas died, how he almost got him killed. Part of me felt angry that I wasn't the one to kill him, for him to get what he deserved. His cowardliness got himself killed, like how it got Noah killed and most likely more people before them. Then I think about what Noah would have thought about me if I had done it, if I had pulled the trigger and as much as I hated it, it wouldn't have brought Noah back.
