"Hi, I need to work and get paid a lot," I said to the restaurant manager where my parents worked.

He sighed, running a hand through his hair.

It was nearly midnight, and I needed money for tomorrow.

"I can work all day tomorrow if I need to! I'll skip school! Please!"

"What do you need it for?"

"A date," I said with a grin.

He sighed, shaking his head.

"Lure her in and then-"

"No, not this time."

"Seriously?" he asked me, raising his eyebrows.

"Does everyone think I sleep with girls then-"

"Yes, we do. And you've brought it upon yourself."

I sighed, rolling my eyes. "Can I please just work tonight? I could really use some money! I can't have her pay for everything!"

"What are you thinking about getting?"

"She mentioned she liked flea markets, so I thought about driving her out to Rocklin and we could look around. Then after that, I could take her out for ice cream or something."

"I've cream? Are you five?"

"Well, she's five-teen!"

He looked at me with raised eyebrows, noticing my wordage.

"Did you get-"

"Oh, I got that, Axton."

"Can I please just work tonight?"

He sighed. "Sure. Someone called in sick, so if you could just take care of the back three tables and clean up after that, it'd be great."

"Thank you!"

"Stay until midnight, then we'll talk. Your parents might have something to say."

I nodded. "Thank you!"

I smiled a big smile, looking like a little kid.

"Tie your hair, please."

"Will do!"

---

It was two in the morning, and a couple of drunk college kids came in. I stayed with them for a while, calling a cab eventually.

I cleaned their table with a rag before I heard a knock on the door.

I sighed. "Closed!"

"Axton!" I turned my head to see Jeremy standing outside the door, to which I smiled at.

"What are you doing?" I asked. "How'd you get out?"

"Unlock the door and I'll get in," he said against the glass."

"Oh, yeah, sorry." I unlocked the door, smiling.

He walked in, smiling.

"Here's this," he said, handing me a one hundred dollar bill.

"No, I can't-"

"You can, Axton!"

"No, I can't! Jeremy, this is yours!"

"Axton, I want you to have it. For tomorrow!"

"Thanks, Jem. I, um, I appreciate it."

"Of course, man."
