One year later...

I was sprawled over the bed with my phone in hands as I scrolled through several pages such as Facebook and Instagram as a distraction. In the background, the television was on, showing older episodes of The Big Bang Theory. The doors to my closet, bathroom and to the hall were opened with all of the lights turned on. Things I would probably go insane without doing. These days, the distraction was needed more than anything, as well as the comfort of knowing that I was not alone.

At the sudden loud noise of someone ringing the doorbell, the phone slipped from my hands and smacked me right on my forehead. "Really?" I whispered to myself, wincing at the slight pain on my temple as I sat up on the bed, rubbing the exact spot it hit me. Chatter of several voices brought my attention back, realization dawning on me that Collin and Brian, very close friends of ours had arrived. The rate my heart was going at picked up at its speed noticeably as I stood up. Briefly glancing at the television that was still on, I took a deep breath in to calm my nerves down.

Deep breaths. Deep, even, steady breaths.

Plastering a smile on my face, I walked out of the door and with a few seconds of hesitation, made my way downstairs to greet the boys.

"No, dude, really. It scared the fuck out of me," the voice of Brian said, with both a serious and playful tone to his statement.

"Yeah, he just stood there across the street, watching us," Collin added. "Fucked up kids these days, have nothing better to do, eh?"

Three boys came into view as I neared the end of the steps. My brother, Brian and Collin. Both Brian and Collin took their coats off while probably telling about an incident that must have occurred to them a while ago as my brother was just closing the door.

"Lil' C," Collin said with a grin upon seeing me, throwing his arms up in the air and wiggling his fingers as a motion for me to come and hug him. Laughing at his behaviour, I shook my head for a no and crossed my arms over my chest, staying firmly planted on the very spot at the last step. I barely saw him pulling his lower lip dramatically down in a pout as heavy arms wrapped themselves around me from the side in a tight hug. Immediately, I tensed up and the fear shot through me as my eyes shut themselves on their own accord.

Deep breaths, Chloe.

"Chloe, when someone hugs you, you normally hug them back, you know," a voice I instantly recognized as Brian's said amused and slowly, the beating of my heart slowed down and I opened my eyes.

Deep breaths. Even, steady breaths.

"Ever thought about the fact that the girl just doesn't like you?" Collin said as Brian released me and it felt like finally, I could breathe again. Smiling faintly at the two bickering with each other about anything like always, I silently took a step back from them to put a much needed distance between us.

"Yeah, fuck you." And both of them walked ahead into the living room, luckily not aware of the mini heart attack I just had.

"Hey you alright?" A soft voice asked from my right. I turned towards my brother with a forced smile and breathed out my answer, "Yeah."
