Chapter 5- The Big Question Part 1

We arrive at an expensive restaurant and we get seated in a private booth.

"So you and mom dated while you were in high school?" I ask him and he nods.

"We had an interesting relationship at our school..." He says and before he can continue I already know what that means.

"Submissive and Dominant?" I ask and he turns to glare at me and shuts his mouth.

"Don't tell me your school does that fucked up shit too, or your boyfriend is into that." He growls and then mumbles something that I'm better off not understanding.

"No to both. But my friend Cleo said something about her ex or something describing their relationship as interesting." I say and rub my arms wishing I brought a jacket.

"Cold?" He asks me and I nod and offer a smile when he takes off his sports coat and wraps it around me.

"You said "no to both" which implies you have a boyfriend?" He asks and I look at him expecting a lecture. He is my dad after all.

"Does he treat you well?" He asks and I nod.

"It's complicated to explain though. We're a group. Colton, Cleo, Trey her brother, and Jake my sort of boyfriend. Although we haven't said we're official yet." I say adding a shrug at the end and he nods.

"Your mom was a hell of a woman in high school and a real fighter." He says and we both laugh.

"Dad... why did you never come and see us?" I ask and almost instantly regret the question.

Shane's POV; The Big Question Part 2

This girl looks like the spitting image of me. Her attitude is similar and her looks are too. Dark hair and dark eyes. Colton looks more like Sam but has characteristics like me. The way he crosses his arms when he's irritated or the way he will roll his eyes. His smile. But here I am talking with my daughter about why I never came to see her.

The food arrives and she thanks the waiter and smiles the way Sam did at the sport's bar that one time I took her. I watch her for a minute while she sips her drink. I reach over and pull her into a hug before I can overthink it and she wraps her arms around my neck.

"I didn't know you even existed, princess or I promise I would have been here." I whisper against her hair and she nods and I feel tears against the side of my neck.

We stay embraced for a minute more before momentarily stop talking to eat.

"So what grade are you two in?" I ask wanting to catch up on everything I missed with my 2 beautiful kids.

"Just started Freshman year today." She replies wiping away her tears.

"And what classes do you take? Any athletics?" I ask her and she giggles and I smile at the soft laughter.

"The usual math, science, English etcetera but I take an AP course in Psychology and astronomy. Colton does AP courses in economy and oceanology. I am captain of our cheerleading team, and he is on the football team with Jake and Trey." She says without stopping to take a breath and I laugh as she finally gasps.

"So smart, good-looking, athletic, you know I'm really starting to like my kids." I joke and she giggles that beautiful laugh again.

"Speaking of Colton I need to find him." She says and immediately I go back to when he stormed out of the house earlier.

"I need to talk to my son, princess." I say and she nods and we get up and I live the cash at the table.
