"SO... HOW ARE THINGS WITH YOU AND NANCY?" Audrey inquired, comfortably leaning back in the chair with her feet on the dashboard. Most of her asked because she cared about him, but a miniscule lingering thought remained in her head. A thought that brought up a pang of guilt at even having such an idea.

Did they break up?

But what's worse is... Why did this thought make her feel so relieved? She was never really fond of Nancy, and how she felt her best friend was treated, but Audrey couldn't deny that Steve seemed to be better because of her. So why does she feel... happy?

"Audrey?"

"Oh - Yeah?" She snapped out of her thoughts, realizing that she had in fact asked him the question, which must've confused him to no end. Surely enough, his face was full of concern as he waved his hand across her face. She followed his movements for a moment before quickly snatching his arm quickly and dropping it with an unamused look on her face.

"Okay, okay!" He relented, "Just wanted to make sure you were with me. I answered your question."

"Oh, sorry,"

"Don't apologize, silly." He scolded, placing his right hand that wasn't on the steering wheel upon her head, messing up her hair. "We're working on things."

Audrey scoffed quietly, only with enough volume for herself to hear. That's what people said when things weren't going very well, and they needed an excuse to keep themselves afloat.

"That's good to hear." She said, sounding more bored than she had intended to, hoping Steve hadn't picked up on it. He didn't.

"But hearing her say that... It just made me realize some things."

Audrey quirked at these words. Steve hadn't elaborated upon what Nancy had actually said to him that night, and she was eager to hear more about what the Wheeler Girl had said to gain such a reaction out of him.

"She called me bullshit, Adds. She called us bullshit." He sighed, rubbing his hand down his face as his eyes stayed focused on the road.

"That's fucked."

"I know!"

"And what did you say?" She asked.

"I don't really know... I kind of just stormed off." His voice trailed off, defeat evident in his tone. Audrey knew him well enough to understand how much this crushed him. Especially with the stuff that had happened with his family. Steve wasn't unfamiliar with being told he wasn't worth it. Audrey did all she could to reassure him often.

"I'm sorry, Steve." She frowned, looking at him, her eyes holding a certain seriousness.

He just shrugged, sparing her a quick glance before looking away again.

And that's how they were for the rest of the drive.

The duo pulled up to Hawkins High not long after, parking the car and landing their eyes upon the rest of their group. As usual, the couple was wrapped in one another, Carol's arms remaining crossed, chewing obnoxiously on a piece of bubble gum, as her boyfriend had her between his biceps. At the sight of Steve and Addy, they reluctantly broke apart and began to approach the parked car.

"Oh, my goodness, Hun, where have you been?" Carol questioned accusingly, pulling Audrey into her embrace.

"You know, out and about." She played it off, laughing slightly.
