"I HAVE A TERRIBLE FEELING ABOUT THIS," Nancy spoke, her posture rigid. Steve paced back and forth nervously in front of her, trying to formulate an idea on how to get them out of this situation. They were two people with a combined goal but totally different motives. One was focused on the sole purpose of saving their own skin and the other, just out of pure worry for their best friend.
"This is bad... this is really bad." Said a stressed-out Steve. As much fun as he had at the party, he was starting to regret it.
Audrey had happened to be walking by the alley on her way to her next class when she heard her friends. She contemplated continuing on her way to avoid being late. Curiosity had the better of her however and she made her way towards them. The looks on their faces insinuated that whatever they were discussing wasn't good.
"What did you do and what do you need me to do to fix it?" She giggled.
Steve placed a hand up in frustration, briefly acknowledging his friend's arrival, telling her that now was not the time. He turned back to his girlfriend.
"The cops." He began. "They're gonna want to talk to all of us now. Tommy, Carol, everybody who was at that party."
"Is this about Barb?" Audrey asked, picking up on the conversation topic immediately, her playful mood now gone.
"So?" Nancy asked Steve, completely ignoring Audrey. The girl huffed and crossed her arms, not appreciating it.
"My parents are gonna murder me." Steve ground out.
"Are you serious right now?"
You don't understand, Nance, my dad's a grade-A asshole."
Audrey absolutely understood where Steve was coming from, having met the older Harrington many times during their friendship. She decided not to bring it up though due to their focused demeanors.
"Barb is missing and you're worried about your dad?" Nancy asked incredulously. She couldn't possibly understand how the situation invited any sort of selfishness.
"Should I go? I really feel like I should go." Audrey muttered, shuffling her feet awkwardly against the gravel.
"Shut up Audrey!" they shouted simultaneously.
"Listen... when you talk to the cops, just don't mention the beers," Steve said after a brief pause. He looked towards the girl he had yelled at previously, making a mental note to apologize later. "That applies to you as well."
Audrey raised her hands in surrender.
"But how am I supposed to explain this?" She asked gesturing to her injured hand.
"I don't know, say you tripped or something."
"I can't believe you right now." Nancy frowned, looking sympathetically at the Valentine girl before turning on her heel and storming off.
"Nancy wait, Nancy!" Steve pleaded.
"Yikes." Audrey huffed.
"What?"
"Nothing that was just kinda tragic, dude." She replied, trying to hold the smirk back. Steve's demeanor deflated instantly and he slumped his shoulders. "Look, just give her time. She'll come around."
"I sure hope you're right." Steve sighed, leaning his back against the wall. "I'm sorry for shouting at you earlier... I know how that makes you feel."
A surprised look crossed the girls' features as she thought they hadn't noticed. She smiled sadly and nodded, indicating that she understood.
"Hey uh, what's been going on with you and Byers?" Steve asked.
"What do you mean?" She said cluelessly. Steve sighed.
"You've just been hanging out with him a lot lately."
"I mean I guess..." Audrey furrowed her brows. She didn't understand why everyone kept saying that to her.
"You two aren't... you know?" He trailed off.
"Together?"
"Yeah... That." Steve winced as if the word physically hurt him.
"No Steve, we're not." She assured and he let out the breath he didn't know he was holding in. He didn't know why he felt like this, he had a girlfriend. "Don't you have other things to worry about other than my love life?"
"Yeah no, of course, I was just wondering." Audrey nodded at him slowly.
"Alright well, actually have to get to class now, seeing as I care about my academics but I'll catch ya later!" Audrey approached her friend and planted her lips on his cheek in goodbye. She patted where her lips previously were and backed up, making her way to the building of her next class. "Catcha later, Stevie Wonder."
Steve touched his cheek, feeling conflicted as ever. Just like when they were kids. When he would spend hours staring at the ceiling thinking of the blue-eyed blonde and her contagious smile. He finally thought he had gotten over these feelings but now he wasn't so sure.
"Goodbye, Adds."
"Mr Harrington to the front office please." The intercom sounded, causing his heartbeat to quicken. He took a deep breath and proceeded to the building.
