AUDREY WALKED THROUGH THE HALLS OF HAWKINS HIGH, FEELING SLIGHTLY OUT OF PLACE. She smiled at everyone who smiled and replied to their kind greetings with some of her own. It was as if nothing had changed in the world of Audrey Valentine. But everything had.
"Look who the cat drug in!" The loud voice boomed through the halls. A sly smirk wormed onto her face as she recognized the voice that owned it and looked over to see her frenemy, Carol and her group of friends and to her surprise, Nancy Wheeler and Barbara Holland.
Steve Harrington was known as King Steve while Audrey was the Queen Bee. Most would tell you it was because she was the one in charge, but others would tell you it was because she was the honey to the bitter that is school. Sure, there were people that disliked her but if anyone had a problem with her, they never spoke of it due to the scrutiny they'd receive from her friends and peers.
"Yours truly," She bowed, smiling at her as she accepted a hug from each of them.
"So, my dad has left town on a conference and my mom's gone with him because she doesn't trust him," Steve prompted, getting down to business. He knew he wanted to talk to Audrey and fast but he thought better of it with all of the people present. He would speak to her later.
"Good call." Tommy teased and Audrey smacked him upside the head, scolding him for his unkind words, knowing full well why he had said them.
"So are you in?" Steve finished.
Audrey rolled her eyes, predicting what her best friend was talking about. She had been to her fair share of parties in her lifetime and it was quite apparent that 'parents aren't home' was a universal invitation to his usual intimate get together. And seeing as he was inviting Nancy Wheeler of all people, she put two and two together.
"Are they...?" She whispered quietly to Carol. The girl just scoffed, rolled her eyes, and nodded as if the thought itself bothered her.
"In for what?" Nancy asked slowly, not quite following the flow of conversation. Audrey found herself feeling bad for Nancy. Not only was she dating a complete idiot, but she was a good kid and Audrey knew that if she hung around their crowd too much, she would change. People like Nancy Wheeler and Barbara Holland shouldn't be getting drunk at some dumb party.
Neither should Audrey Valentine.
"No parents... Big house." Carol explained, watching Nancy with annoyance.
"...A party?" The group nodded while Barbara stood there, feeling uncomfortable as she shifted from one foot to another. "It's Tuesday."
Carol and Tommy started laughing
"It'll be low key. . . just us." Steve assured. "Are you in or are you out?"
Audrey decided to interrupt the train-wreck of a conversation, raising her hand as if she needed permission to speak.
"Count me out. Sorry, but I got a bunch of homework to catch up on."
"Don't be a bore, Addy. Come on, it'll be fun." Carol pushed.
"Nope." Audrey finished.
Carol looked about to open her mouth to speak once more but immediately closed it as someone entered the hallway. She rolled her eyes.
"Oh God, look."
Steve turned, looking Jonathan up and down. "Oh God, that's depressing."
"...Should we say something?" Nancy asked, eyeing the boy with remorse.
"I don't think he speaks," Carol said.
"For goodness sakes, guys," Audrey muttered, making her way over to Jonathan before she found herself burying her fist into one of their faces. he was putting up flyers labeled 'Have You See Me?' with a picture of his younger brother.
"Need any help?" Audrey asked, walking up to him.
"I wouldn't want to bother you, I know how important school --"
"Believe me, you're more important." Audrey smiled.
A blush rose to Jonathan's cheeks and he nodded in thanks.
"Hey, Addy? Thanks for last night." He started, finding it significantly more difficult to meet her eyes. "So I wanted to know--"
"Hey." Nancy's voice called out, interrupting him. "I wanted to say I'm sorry, about everything... Everyone's thinking about you. It sucks."
"Yeah." Jonathan agreed, jaw locked tight.
"I'm sure he's fine. He's a smart kid."
Audrey just stood there, watching their conversation, not wishing to interfere and when the bell rang, she somehow felt relieved.
"I have to go. . . Chemistry test." She said apologetically, waving him off.
"Yeah, thanks."
She walked off to class, leaving the two friends in the hallway alone. Audrey straightened up her posture.
"Where to?" She asked.
"Lonnie's."
