"SHIT SHIT SHIT!" Audrey cursed, running a hand through her damp hair. Thunder sounded in the distance and her head whipped from side to side, frantically looking around. She attempted to yell out but her voice was drowned out by the intense patter of the rain.

"El!" She called out, hoping for the young girl to appear out of nowhere. The two girls had gotten split up and even as Audrey squinted through the dark night, she couldn't spot her.

She let out a cry of frustration, knees buckling as she fell onto the soaked grass. Tears ran down her face, seeming invisible due to the rain that streamed down her cheeks as well, creating an illusion. Her throat burned from all of the strain she had put on her voice and she coughed in an attempt to clear the tension, only worsening the problem.

Being alone, especially in the dark terrified Audrey. She didn't like the fact that she was vulnerable in this state and as much as she hated to admit it, if some stranger had offered her shelter, she might have accepted. At the moment, the last thing she needed was to be by herself.

Audrey, kicking her mind into gear for the final time, dragged herself to a nearby tree and propped her back against it. She pulled her legs up to her chest and ducked her head into her knees, putting herself in the protective position she had used since her childhood. As dumb as it had sounded, young Audrey had believed this was the safest place for her. She thought that being buried within herself would keep the monsters at bay, not daring to mess with her.

She was wrong however, it only allowed the monsters in.

Leaves crunched, approaching the shivering girl and she didn't move a muscle, scared of what terrors had decided to toy with her now. She mumbled a quick prayer before her arm was sharply tugged on, pulling her off the ground. Her eyes shot open immediately and she let out a loud cry of discomfort and fear.

She calmed down though once she saw who it had been.

"Audrey?"

✧・Steve Harrington・✧

The boy with the hair looked up at the large house before him, shoving his hands into his pocket nervously. Within the house was his best friend who was either sick or dead, having found her education more important than anything. It wasn't like her to miss a single day, even if she hadn't been feeling good.

His heart was racing as he anticipated how the following encounter would go down. He was about to tell Audrey about his new girlfriend, Nancy Wheeler, whom he had started a little while ago. He knew that they had been sneaking around long enough and wanted to come clean, leaving no secrets between them once more.

He just hoped she approved.

Nancy was great. She was everything her parents could have possibly wanted for him and he believed it too.

He knocked on the door a few times, before placing his hand on the doorknob, intending to open the door. It wouldn't budge however and confusion flooded through him. Audrey's family never locked their doors. As unsafe as it sounded, they never found a reason to.

A loud stomping from inside caused the Harrington boy to let out a sigh of relief, glad that someone was in fact home. The door clicked unlocked and it swung open to reveal a disheveled Brenda Valentine. Judging by the expression on her face, she was the least bit pleased by his presence. She was never very fond of Steve. Her lips turned up in disgust as she eyed the boy up and down.

"What, Steve?" She snapped.

Although he was aware of their mutual disliking, Steve had never expected her to snap at him like that and he couldn't help but jump back a little. He gulped and planted his feet once more, determination taking over the fear.

"Audrey's not here dumbass." She rolled her eyes. "Can you like, go now? I have a guest"

That is when he noticed it. Her hair that was usually perfectly intact, was now ratty and lipstick was smudged all over her face.

She wasn't alone here.

Steve's face screwed up in disgust and he couldn't help but feel angry that any mother could do something like this to her kids.

Mrs. Valentine started to close the door before Steve placed his hand out, stopping it in motion. He knew not to push her but was worried for his friend nonetheless.

"Wait, she's not here? She wasn't at school today either." He stated. Brenda's eyes flashed with an emotion Steve recognized as slight worry but she covered it up immediately, completely repulsed by the fact that she might appear to care for her own child.

"No, Steve. She's probably at that disgusting diner hanging around that hobo guy, Bob was it?"

Steve knew she was talking about Benny and he didn't appreciate the way she so easily trashed him. He went to call her out on it but thought better of picking a fight and he nodded his head.

"Yeah, I guess I'll check there... Thanks." Steve thanked, turning around and hopping down the steps, making his way back to his car.

He was going to find Audrey.

I planned on giving two chapters today but seeing as I just now finished one, that will most likely not happen ahah.
