Poem: Self-Preservation

You're hooded, you've created
Your own blind spot
Those sneaking up from the back
Left or right
Find you caught
With limited sight

Two eyes, one head, one neck
As the train roars down the tracks
You'd better check side to side
Front and back

Our senses are for safety
Not only enjoyment
To stay alive another day
And avoid getting twisted
And bent

You are your own worst enemy
And also your best friend
Even for agnostics and atheists
This is a god-send

The ditches nearly overflow
Traffic noise controls the distance
Dead leaves near rows of trees
Forming the resistance

As I battle self-doubt and apathy
Emerging from the outhouse
I find the strength to do Round Two
Invading the territory
Of the coyote, squirrel
And mouse
