Naida slowly peeked out of the room. Krait was floating at one of the windows, looking up, Ray was preparing dinner in the other room, and she didn't see Lionfish, Mako, or Shark. She silently snuck out of the doorless doorway and down the short hall, peering into the couple rooms in search of Mako.
She found him in what would be a bathroom, though they didn't really have a use for it aside from the mirror since they were underwater. She was going to get his attention when she noticed him doing something odd and decided to stay quiet and watch.
He was holding a small grey squid, only about the length of a pencil, over his eye and pinching it so ink came out. He did this over each eye, then looked into the mirror and blinked a few times, small washes of black rippling out with each blink.
Was this the merfolk version of eye drops? But, wouldn't ink distort his sight instead of helping it?
In the mirror, he saw her and whirled around, jumping with a powerful spaz of his tail that sent him into the roof. "Ouch." He hissed. "Naida, what are you doing? How long have you been there?"
Naida opened her mouth to respond, but before she could form words, music, no, a song filled her ears; though it wasn't from Mako.
"Heartbroken and wary, you have suffered enough; bonds can be broken, and life's pretty tough; come to me, oh pure one, I'll whisk you away; to a place only I know, where a better life lays." The song, ringing clear and soft, startled Naida and she stared at Mako, expecting a reaction from him. The voice that sung, it sounded... like Lanai's!
He continued to give her the look he had before the song, expecting answers. "Well?"
He must've not heard the song, so it must be Lanai who called out to her! That's exactly what Naida needed, a friend, a female friend at that. Lanai wouldn't get jealous when she ranted about a lost lover. She wouldn't take a simple reassuring hug as something more. She was who she really needed right now.
"N-nevermind, I'm going for a swim," Naida said dismissively and turned away, but Mako grabbed her hand.
"Naida, is everything okay, you feel... broken. My gift may be controlling emotions, but it doesn't take that to see that you could use someone to talk to. Do you mind if I swim with you?" He asked, worry emanating from every word.
She squeezed his hand. She wanted to let go, but her heart needed someone now, not after who knows how long of searching for Lanai. "No." She began to cry.
