"hey hop." said a voice from behind him. hopper turned and saw joyce, smiling at him with her beautiful short brown hair and gorgeous big brown eyes. he stood there for a moment, looking at how pretty she was. he was so happy she was in his life. every time he looked at her, it reminded him of how lucky he was to have someone like her. "sign my yearbook?" she asked. it was the last day of 10th grade. hopper laughed. "you think your best friend would deny signing your yearbook joyce?" joyce laughed. and yes, she still crinkled her nose when she laughed. hopper loved that little feature about her. he never told her that.

there was a lot of things he loved about her that he didn't tell her. he loved how she was always right, he loved when she smiled, he loved when she helped him with things, he loved when she knew every line of every movie that they watched together, he loved how creative she was, he loved how organized and put together she was, he loved her sense of humor, he loved when they would build blanket forts together, he loved all of her drawings that she made, he loved it when she would get whip cream on her nose while eating chocolate ice cream (their favorite), he loved when she would tell him everything about a new book she read, he loved everything. he loved everything about her.

joyce had changed a lot over the years. she was so much more confident then she used to be. she had so many more friends, and everyone knew how smart she was, she didn't hide it anymore. she still wasn't what you would call "a popular girl" but at least everyone knew her name. and she didn't know it, but she was beautiful. she always hated the way she looked, she was always so self-conscious, she didn't realize how pretty she was. almost all of the boys in the grade liked her. including hopper.

as for hopper, he was the quarterback on the school football team. he didn't do too well in school, unless joyce helped him study of course. he was still tall, and she was still short. he wasn't known as the kid who beat up alexis lopez anymore (thank goodness she moved away), and he wasn't known as james or jim. he was known as hopper. he was known as the nickname joyce gave him. he always liked it. and he liked it even more because joyce gave it to him. she was the only one who called him hop. that was their thing, their thing only.

like joyce, hopper didn't know how handsome he was. every girl liked him. including joyce.hopper handed the yearbook back to joyce. "what are you doing tonight?" he asked. "ummm...i don't think anything actually!" she replied. "wanna come over my place?" "yeah sure, 6?" "5? we could go have dinner if we did it earlier." "oh okay, that works out great!" the bell rang. school was finally done! "anyway, i'll see you tonight! can't wait!" joyce said smiling as she waved and blew him a kiss. he was so happy she was his best friend. she's everything he ever wanted and more. he couldn't describe how much she meant to him.

when she finally got in her car, joyce looked down at the note hopper had put in her yearbook."every day is better with you. thank you for being my best friend, and always making me smile and laugh like no one else can. -hop" joyce blushed after reading it. hopper was the best friend she could ever have.

friends. that's all they were, nothing more.
