travis x cooper (romantic, slight angst)

travis wants more than this dull grey life, and one day, he gets it.

soulmate & high school au

Travis blinked the drowsiness out of his eyes, waking up to the dull, monotone setting of his classroom. He'd fallen asleep in class again, and felt an object hit his skull as he struggle to lift his head off of his table.

"Travis."

He heard the stern tone of his teacher call him, and shot up in his seat.

"I'm awake, I'm awake!" He yelped out in fear, as he heard sniggering from the desks behind him.

He whipped his head around and saw some of the jocks sitting behind him, whispering to each other with grins on their faces. Cooper, who was on the football team, had a few small pieces of paper on his notebook, like he had just ripped out a page. Which he probably had, considering 1, Travis had just been hit in the head with a crushed up piece of paper, and 2, Cooper had the most mischievous grin on his face.

That same one that made Travis' heart beat profusely every time he saw it.

Shaking the thought of Cooper's adorable smile out of his head, Travis reached under the table and grabbed that rolled up paper that Cooper threw at his head. He unfurled it and the words scrawled on it made his intensely beating heart crumble into dust.

"Wake up Fag."

The world seemed to spin around him. The already blurry surroundings seemed to fade even further into nothingness. His breathing started to quicken, and his heart started pounding again but not in a good way.  His thoughts were racing, like two pieces of paper being blown around by a couple of fans, bound to stay afloat until one crushed the other.

It felt as if this would go on forever. The sadness, the pain, the panic. Yet a sound, while stinging him like venom, still brought him back to reality.

God, he was precious.

Cooper's chuckles in the background helped Travis stabilize himself. No matter how heartbreaking, how much it hurt to know that Cooper hated him, there was still some kind of melancholic hope, like a black and white movie about colours. No matter what, at least Cooper would still be there, tormenting him, making him feel okay.

You see, one reason Travis was the target of many bullies in his school was because he hadn't received his colours yet. Oh, you don't know what that means? Well, here, soulmates exist. And everything you see, flowers, rainbows, everything, is in black and white. Until you and your soulmate touch.

It is a very assuring feeling to know you have someone out there made for you. Someone that, when you finally find them, you will have a special connection. At least, that's how Travis used to view the world.

Most of his classmates had met their soulmates already. Whether it was within their small neighborhood and school, or overseas on a trip. They had all experienced that true joy and happiness, and the bliss of seeing colours. Those beautiful colours. Well, Travis had only been told that they were beautiful.

A soft buzzing feeling broke Travis out of his depressing thoughts. He realised that his classmates were all leaving the class for lunch, chattering with each other about boys, girls, and everything in between. Travis fished his phone out of his pocket as he started walking towards the cafeteria, seeing a single message from his friend Carson.

callmecargskin: wanna eat lunch together?

sure \o/ :traves

Having finished eating lunch, Travis trotted over to his locker to grab some books for his next class. His footsteps seemed to drag him down towards the floor, like gravity was 10 times stronger than normal. He couldn't get his mind of the thought of colours, and Cooper.

Even just thinking of his name made him melt inside.

As if the stars had aligned, Cooper had chosen that exact moment to run down the hall blindly, crashing headfirst into Travis.

Travis' body hit the floor, the impact hurting more than Cooper's words.

"What the fuck fag-"

Cooper stopped abruptly, Travis not understanding why. As he opened his eyes, he realised why Cooper was so shocked.

The first thing he noticed was how much more attractive Cooper looked, especially close up in front of him. His eyes, in shock, were sparkling. His hair, shaggy as it was, seemed sculpted, the colours accenting the tone of his skin, which seemed much darker than his own.

They stayed in that position for a while, Cooper knelt over Travis who was lying on the floor. It garnered the attention of many students, who all stared and giggled, some taking photos.

"Cooper what the hell are you doing, get off that fag. Don't tell me you're one of them too." The indistinguishable voice of one of Cooper's fellow Jocks travelled over.

"I- uh," Travis began to stutter, intently staring at Cooper's eyes, which he noticed started to swell and tear up.

He felt a weight lift off his body as Cooper stood up and ran away, and his heart sank back down into place.
