Mckenzee:
I spent the whole day with my mom, Samra, Melody, Symone, my aunts and female cousins celebrating my last day as a Faraji. I was gonna be a Tesfaye in less than twenty-four hours and my heart was full of emotions. I was scared and nervous but also very excited.

I stood in front of the mirror in my old bedroom as I looked at myself in the white dress I chose for the night.

Abel's groomsmen were gonna be there any minute to ask my mom for her final blessing and even though I knew she'd say yes, I was still nervous.

Melody walked into my room. "Your mom said dinner's almost ready."

"Alright, I'm coming down soon."

She asked as she sat down on my bed. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, why?"

"You look nervous."

"I am."

"What, why? Are you and Abel arguing or something?"

"No, I'm just worried my mom won't give Abel her blessing."

"Why wouldn't she?"

"I don't know. There's really no reason for her to say no...I guess I'm just paranoid."

"Sounds like it. You need to relax Zee. You wanna smoke?"

"Bitch are you trying to get me killed? My grandma is down stairs! If I walk in that room smelling like-"

"I was just kidding, Zee! Damn." She started to laugh. "But seriously, relax."

"I'll try."

"Zee!" My mom called upstairs. "Melody! Dinner is ready!"

We went downstairs and set the table as my mom brought the food out. My grandma said grace and just as everyone started to eat, there was a knock at door.

My mom got up to get it and I went to follow her but Ms.Samra stopped me.

"Kenzee, you know you're not supposed to go with her."

"But-"

"Sit back down Zee."

"Okay, okay."

I sat back down at the table and tried to hold a conversation with one of my cousins but I kept thinking of what was going on in the other room.

After thirty minutes or so my mom walked back into the dining room and I couldn't read her expression at all.

I asked nervously. "So?"

"I gave him the final blessing." She smiled. "Your gifts are in the living room, you can open them after dinner."

"God, I was so nervous."

"Why would I have said no?"

"I don't know." I shrugged. "I'm just happy that you didn't."

She sat back down at the table and we all continued our own side conversations as we ate.

When everyone was done, they followed my mom and I into the living room so I could open the things that Abel had sent for me.

I sat down on the couch and everyone huddled around me as my mom passed me the first box. It was a medium sized black box that looked like it came from jewelry story and I was right.
