LORELEI

I PREFER silence over noise. There is the calmness that it gives me everytime I sit in a place without anyone speaking. The air feels clean no matter how toxic it is in reality, but what I like about the silence that makes me calm is that, there is no awkwardness.

I really prefer silence over noise, but why can't Jamie give me that peace of mind?

"'Di ba, Loki-dear? Aminin mo na kasing mas magaling ako kesa sa 'yo para naman kiligin ako!" pagpupumilit ni Jamie.

My eyes shifted to her arms clinging to Loki and the latter has, obviously, no plans of removing it. I rolled my eyes and went back writing.

"Your photographic memory is an advantage to you," the other one said. I can feel him not totally smiling but his lips are slightly curved. I just know him well.

"Yiee! Ang bait mo talaga Loki-dear!"

Mabait in what way?

"Maaga kang tatanda n'yan, Lori."

Tiningnan ko ang kababata kong nagsalita.

"What?"

"Your eyebrows are furrowed. Maaga ka niyang tatanda," puna niya. "Is there something bothering you?"

I looked at Loki and Jamie and my eyes rolled again. "Iniisip ko lang kung paano sasagutan 'yong sa Calculus. May hindi ako naintindihan," sagot ko.

Knowing Al, he wouldn't believe me. I know he has been observing my actions earlier. He still smiled. "Alin ba?"

"Hayaan mo na. Aaralin ko na lang mamaya sa dorm," saad ko para hindi na humaba pa ang usapan. I'm not in the mood to play good girl during these times that I see something that itches my eyes.

"Lori," Loki called out.

I don't know if I was fast to look at him or the time is just enough. "What is it?"

I tried to sound cold because I'm seriously in a bad mood.

"I have some codes. Do you want to answer it?"

Jamie's eyes went from Loki to me. "Ako rin Loki-dear, pwedeng magsagot?"

"You can just sit there."

"As long as I can cling to you, I don't mind." It was followed by Jamie's irritating giggle.

Since Loki did not answer her, I'm sure she take it as a sign of agreement. I remove my eyes off of them and stared at the notebook in front of me where symbols were scribbled. My insides were rejoicing for an unknown reason. Perhaps I know the reason but I don't want to name it. My pride keeps me sane though.

There are six codes to decode. Some are unfamiliar to me.

"Pwedeng mag-search?"

Giving you this would be nonsense."

Al interjected. "Can I decode it, too?"
