"don't let it get to you, it was three of them and two of us," jj told pope, trying to make him feel better about the events of the previous night. flora, who still hadn't returned to the cameron household, went with jj to pope's dad's work. flora gave pope a reassuring smile before saying.
"excuse me, kie and i saved your asses," she said to jj, sure he wouldn't admit to it.
"we sure did," kie said after her, giving flora a high five.
"yeah, yeah, girl power," jj said with a high pitched voice. "anyways, what was your thought process, hitting them in the head!" jj said impressed
"i don't know man, i kind of acted off instinct, i was a cornered animal," pope explained.
"hey pope, someone here to see you," heyward, pope's dad said, the deputy walking right behind him.
"fuck," flora murmured under her breathe, audible enough just for jj to hear. the boy let go of the object he was holding, grabbed flora's hand and squeezed it tightly.
"evening, officer," pope said nervously, obviously scared of what was coming.
"i have an arrest warrant for felony destruction of property," the officer stated clearly.
"what!" flora heard pope's dad said.
"he's screwed jj, he's seriously screwed," flora whispered to the blond boy, scared of pope's future. jj looked at the brunette with an unreadable look, pulling her by the shoulders quickly.
"i'm taking the blame, okay," he said quickly, not looking flora in the eyes.
"you can't jj," she argued, following jj, pope, kie,heyward and the officer outside. "your dad, i mean, you just can't," she persisted. over the past few days, jj had turned into a brother for the girl, she loved him, therefore, it was her duty to try to protect him.
"i have nothing to lose," jj said, giving the girl a warm smile. "it wasn't him!" jj yelled, protecting pope.
"it wasn't him, i swear, it was jj and i," flora said, standing next to jj. jj and pope looked at the girl as if she were out of her mind, but she had to protect pope and to be there for jj, just like him, she had nothing to lose.
"yeah, pope was trying to talk us out of it, but i was mad because he got beat up," jj said, coming to a stop to allow flora to talk.
"and i was so angry, rafe and topper had beaten him up, it wasn't fair, they acted like assholes just because they came from figure eight," flora said, speaking from the heart.
" we can't let you take the blame for something we did, you've got too much to lose," jj said, shrugging his shoulders.
"flora, jj, what are you doing?" pope argued.
"we're telling the truth," flora said with a warm smile, it was her turn to squeeze jj's hand reassuringly.
"jj, flora, come on," pope persisted, not wanting his friends to take the blame for something that he had done.
"just shut up, pope!" jj yelled, indirectly telling pope to let him and flora take the blame instead of him, that the decision was made.
"he's a good kid, you know where i'm from," jj said, looking at the officer directly in the eyes.
"yeah," the officer said, as if he wasn't quite convinced yet. "that's the whole truth?" he asked pope. flora closed her eyes, hoping pope would let them take the blame.
"yeah, that about covers it," pope said quietly. flora opened her eyes relieved, flinching when the cold handcuffs touched her warm skin.
"we're in this together," she mumbled to jj, hoping the officer wouldn't hear her.
"sadly, you're a kook and i'm a pogue princess, we'll never end up in this together," jj said with a sad sigh.
