Chapter 25

Things were tense. That goes without saying. D'Qar had been a home for many of the base for a long time now and all of a sudden everyone had to leave. Children were born on this base, people got married, people died, it was safe. It held so many stories that would be passed down generations that it felt bitter that there was now an evacuation of the base that so many people had found a family and home and solace in.

You especially were feeling particularly bittersweet about the evacuation. Despite currently speed walking towards HQ with the man you love who you had just argued with - and Connix - you couldn't help but think of everything that happened on this base. It goes without saying that you had spent a majority of your teenage and all of your early adult years on this base. You had a family here, a man you loved dearly in spite of the conversation that had happened not too long ago, a droid that you thought of as your own child, an injured friend, your dear mother, and the memory of your father.

You had finally arrived at HQ, albeit slightly out of breath, and were now waiting for orders from the General through hologram as she had already found solace on the command ship.

"Poe, what's your plan?" Leia's face was full of concern through the image in the centre of the room.

"There's three Order cruisers up there, we need my team and a group of bombers to be able to take them out," he replies confidently. Even though you had just had an argument, you couldn't help but admit to yourself that his commander voice did something to you.

"And how are you expecting for all of you to get up there without being blown up in the meantime? Are you forgetting that there are three First Order cruisers up there?" she counters appropriately. You were thinking the exact same thing.

"No, which is why i'm going to go up there first, distract them and then blow up all the cannons. That's when everyone else will come in and get the job done," the look on his face makes it evident that he's planning all this as he goes on - and you have to control the urge to roll your eyes at that fact.

"And how exactly are you planning on doing that?" you ask, a slight note of irritation lacing in your voice.

"I'll figure it out," he looks you dead in the eye and you can't help but glare back, clenching your jaw as you do.

"You can't expect us to follow you blindly into a battle with no plan," you bite back. "How are we supposed to put our and our families lives on the line if you can't tell us what you want us to do?"

"I am telling you what to do. I'm going up, creating a distraction, blowing up their cannons and then you wait for my command and help the bombers." It's like a showdown between the two of you and the rest of the team knows it. And they don't like it. Because normally you would be stood next to each other, pinky fingers connected under the table, sending loving glances and timid smiles at each other at every possible opportunity.

But you couldn't cut the tension in the room with a knife right now.

"General?" you enquire without leaving his stare.

"You need to trust your commander, it's his job to make the best decisions for your squad and the people are you. I wouldn't have given him this role if I didn't trust him," Poe's lips curl up slights as if in a way to say 'I win'. "But I also don't approve of you wanting to throw your team in this battle head first with little knowledge of what you want them to do. Dameron, anything happens on this mission it will be under your belt. I trust you to do the right thing."

"Of course, General. Ok everyone, warm up your ships and suit up. Help anyone you can get onto transport ships before you need to be in the sky. Let's go!" he shares one last look at you before you both run out and towards your x-wings, one that says 'i'm sorry, stay safe'.
