As the saying goes, food is the paramount necessity of the people. Without enough food, all grand dreams and the finer things in life would be lost.

If a person sells cars, airplanes, or luxury goods, a change of tide in the world economy would have a great impact on his business. In hard times, these businesses bear the brunt of an economic recession.

But if he trades grains, there will never a lack of business opportunities, no matter what shape the world economy is in.

“Africa is a great place. The land is fertile, with enough sunshine. You put seeds in the ground, you’re almost guaranteed a crop. Not to mention the various minerals, gems and diamonds lying underneath. When we farm here, maybe we can also stumble on oil or diamonds, who knows.”

As they were arriving on the African continent, Chen An looked out of the window, through layers of clouds, at the land covered with jungles lying under them, and contemplated which part of it could be turned into farms. He also wondered what crop should he plant, wheat or corn.

“It’s a wonderful piece of land, but turns out to be the least developed place on earth. It’s really puzzling.” Ding Sheng was also the among the people who came with Chen An this time. He travelled around a lot, but Afria was not among the places he often visited.

“The land is truly rich. Yet the majority of the countries do not have enough food to feed their people. Many are starved each year.” Lu Feng was going through information about the country they would soon arrive in. He would never second-guess Chen An’s decisions: Chen An wanted to farm in Africa, and Lu Feng would follow him without a moment of hesitation.

Lu Feng would gladly go raise pigs, if Chen An asked him to.

“It’s not that hard to understand,” Ivanov let out a puff of smoke. And pointing outside the window with a sapphire-ring decorated hand, he said, “it’s so hot here, you get easily exhausted working. Besides, the land yields its riches readily. There are fruits on the trees, and throngs of wild animals, both in the jungle and on the prairie. So you can get something to eat even if you don’t work. As a result, the locals developed a loathing for work year after year, and they are not exactly trail-blazers in terms of finding new livelihoods.”

As Chen Yang placed a peeled apple before Chen An, he also joined the discussion by saying, “One prospers in worries and hardships, and perishes in ease and comfort.”

The comment brought a smile to Chen An’s face; that was a good sum-up.

Easy comforts tend to wear away one’s will to change; hardships, on the other hand, can provide the drive for going forward.

The local airport was not as lavish as the metropolitan airports they were used to; still, it was much better than they’d imagined. There were a number of duty-free stores, most of which had Chinese directions, so it seemed Chinese visitors were not a rarity here.

As they got off the plane, Chen An spent some time in the duty-free shops. Not that he wanted to buy anything, only he could do with a bit of sight-seeing.

After he took a look around the place, they got on the cars Lu Feng had arranged in advance, and arrived at an also pre-arranged villa. This place of residence had the most cutting-edge security system installed to ensure their safety, plus trained guards on patrol any time of the day.

Unlike life in the big cities and the countries they were used to, Africa, as a whole, was still fraught with conflicts and turmoil. Adding the frequent famine and economic recession on-going in recent years, political and social upheavals were common occurrences on this rich and beautiful land. Even so, people from the outside had not stopped to come to this land and to test the waters in this market.
