Trace a problem back to its source when trying to solve it; otherwise, you would see no end of it.

Since he’d broken the limbs of one of their members─call it bullying, or jungle justice─Chen Yang needed to drive the point home that this was not someone they could meddle with, or they would probably do something more drastic next time.

On the third day after he broke Leon’s limbs, Chen Yang arranged a meeting, where he would talk in person to the leader of the local gang. To avoid being ambushed, they chose a wide-open space in the suburb.

The leader of the organization was a man in his forties named Celi. He had been in many fights. Born on this turbulent land, Celi started playing with a gun before he was ten. At the age of 12, he saw battle for the first time. By now, he’d lost count of the lives that he’d taken.

Celi considered himself the most powerful man in this place, bar the chief. And now some foreigners dared to challenge his authority.

With a cigarette dangling from his lips, Celi sized up the young man in a sleek suit standing in front of him. There was no scar visible on Chen Yang’s face; this handsome young man looked like a delicate flower from a greenhouse. Celi laughed.

“I wondered who dared to touch my man. Well, surprise, surprise, a pretty boy.” Pointing at Chen Yang, Celi did not bother to hide the scorn and sarcasm in his voice.

“If talking could make a person king, you should probably be ruling the universe by now.”

Chen Yang gave the rebuttal with a smile, which immediately wiped the laugh from Celi’s face. The impulsive, bloodthirsty leader of the gang immediately drew his gun and aimed it at Chen Yang, while Chen Yang’s men also drew their weapons. The balance hung by a thread.

“You know who you’re talking to, boy? Listen, this is my place. If I say disappear, you disappear. You want to do business on my turf? You stick by my rules! You hear me?!” Celi shouted, pointing at Chen Yang; the fat on his cheek shook with his voice.

“What if I don’t?”

“Then you die!”

Suddenly everyone heard a whirling sound.

As they were locked in a stand-off, the strange noise came closer. When they looked up in confusion, the dark silhouettes of several helicopters flying towards them could be seen.

Celi was at a total loss: what was happening? Could it possibly be back-up for this boy? But they were just a bunch of farmers, how could they have helicopter? Besides…

As the helicopters flew closer, Celi’s people were astonished to see that these were not civilian aircraft; they were armed helicopters for military use. One cannon ball from these, they would all go up into the air!

“Hey! Who are you?” the aggression in Celi’s voice was gone. He waved to the helicopters to find out who they were. To this point, he did not really think that these belonged to the farmers opposite him.

Celi had glimpsed at Chen Yang just now and caught the confused look on Chen Yang’s face. Thus he was convinced that the farmers were not part of this.

Shortly after Celi asked the question, the helicopters fired a round of shots at him. “Bang, bang, bang─” the shots landed before their feet. Clearly, these shots were not aimed to kill. Nevertheless, these were real bullets that could kill.

These gangsters had bullied ordinary citizens in this place relying on whatever guns and other weapons they could lay their hands on; yet they were no match for fully armed militants. Now they jumped and ran on the spot, throwing their hands in the air, and shouting: “stop! Stop! We’re civilians! You can’t kill civilians!”
