Chen An said he would leave the matter to Chen Yang, and so he did. In the day, he would go to the farm and see about the crops, or discuss with the research staff how to adapt their farming techniques to the local climate and soil conditions. After work, he would go home and tend to his plants. These were his days and he really enjoyed it.

If one thought about it, there weren’t that many people who would go and smash his company up for no reason.

Chen An gave his word he would not interfere; yet he wanted to know who it was that had the audacity to meddle with his business.

The chief?

It couldn’t be; actually, he was the first one Chen An ruled out. They were business partners, and if the chief really did such a thing, it wouldn’t speak well for his future business opportunities.

The chief was getting his fair share out of this, so why would he go and smash up his partner’s company?

Could it be the other three companies who lost to them?

It sounded plausible, yet not quite. Yes, these people lost a business opportunity. But they could always go buy somewhere else. There was no need for them to make it personal.

Besides, these companies had their ways. If they looked into Chen An’s background at all, they would probably get out of it sooner rather than later. New as Chen An was to the business, there was more than one party on his side that they could not afford to meddle with.

Some local organizations?

That was the only remaining possibility.

In the early days of the farm, the manager Zhou had informed Chen An that certain local groups had been in touch and wanted their protection fees, which amused Chen An to no end. Asking him for protection fees? Seriously?

And so he told Zhou to escort these guests out of the door and soon brushed the matter aside. Now, could it be because he sent them away, they’d come back to give him a showdown?

Chen An knew Chen Yang; the young man was capable of teaching these fellas a lesson. However, Chen An still had some doubt as to whether the warm and bright young man in his eyes could solve the problem once and for all.

Seated on the couch, Chen An checked the time. Chen Yang had been out after dinner.

In the dark night, most families had closed their doors and stayed inside.

On the street, occasionally a handful of loungers strolled past, singing or smoking. They left empty wine bottles on the ground and kicked them here and there.

“Hey, look!” a boy pointed at several black cars coming in their direction, whistled in provocation, and threw the bottle in his hand at the car.

“Bang─”the bottle burst into pieces as it landed on the car. The intoxicated crowd cheered and laughed.

The car window rolled down as it slowed. A pitch black item pointed squarely at the boisterous young men, who froze and felt a cold shiver ran over them, as if a bucket of iced water had been dumped on their head. They apologized hurriedly: “sorry, I’m so sorry, sorry…”

Pulling their companions with them, they stumbled and ran away off the street.

Chen Yang took back his gun, rolled up the window and said: “Go.”

The four or five cars rolled smoothly in the darkness which covered up the chaos of the night. The cars hardly made any sound, like a cheetah in wait, and getting slowly closer towards its prey, while the prey was totally unaware of the coming danger.
