After several rounds of negotiation, Chen An successfully acquired his first piece of land in Africa. As his competitors put it, if they raised the price any higher, they probably could get the land, but they wouldn’t be able to make much profit. The companies needed a business that could make money, and not every company was ready to spend their own profit on charity, like Chen An was.

Was he here simply to do business? Truth be told, he was far beyond the stage of living for money in his life.

Actually, he didn’t knew much about agriculture; that was why he needed Chen Yang’s company to deal with the professional side of things. As for himself, he worked alongside these professionals to make plans, and learned new things along the way. All in all, after Chen An had his fun being a teacher, he rolled up his sleeves and went into the field.

A drizzle fell from the overcast sky. Land scorched by the summer sun bathed in the long-awaited rain. It was good news for Chen An. Important as sunshine was, the crops were going to be scorched before long without rainwater.

“Is Chen An still not back?” Chen Yang stood by the window with his phone in hand and waited anxiously for the man. Word came from the field that Chen An headed home in a car before the rain started. How could it take him so long to get home? Chen Yang ended the call, feeling ill at ease. He stood there and thought for a moment. Then he decided to go and find Chen An, at which point he heard the sound coming from the balcony.

As the man came into Chen Yang’s vision, the sleeves of his rain-water stained shirt were rolled up to the elbow, his hair were a bit mussed up, and on his feet were a pair of black rain boots which covered up to his knees. Chen An himself were staring at a plant with mud on it held in his hand.

Chen Yang felt a rush of relief. Slowly letting out his breath, he looked at the man who had apparently just climbed up the ladder onto the balcony, and asked: “An, what are you doing? You’re soaked. Careful not to catch a cold.”

“Come off it. Stop treating me as if I’m a porcelain doll. I’m not as fragile as you think.” Chen An answered airily. His bang was wet and blocked his vision, so Chen An pushed it backwards, and sure enough, the mud on his fingers left a trail on his forehead. He seemed nonetheless unconcerned.

Chen An placed the plant somewhere away from the rain. To avoid getting mud and water on the floorboards, he toed off the rain boots on the balcony and rolled up his trousers, revealing a pair of clean white ankles. Then he bent down and again picked up the plant.

All the complaints on Chen Yang’s lips evaporated when he saw the man so at ease. Chen Yang sighed. Ivanov was right: Chen An was getting younger, and more willful with it.

Humming a tune, Chen An transplanted the wild flower carefully into a flower pot and took his time as he did it. He stood with one foot squarely placed on the floor and the other on tiptoe, leaving the underside, which was pale from rainwater, in sight.

Chen Yang brought a dry towel and another which he soaked in hot water and wrung dry. So while Chen An worked on his plant, Chen Yang took care of him from aside.

He first dried Chen An’s hair with the dry towel, and the wiped the mud off his cheeks and forehead with the other one. Seeing that Chen An’s clothes were mostly wet, Chen Yang urged: “change your clothes first.”

Without looking at Chen Yang, Chen An answered as he raked the soil loose: “help me then.”

His casual tone, however, made Chen Yang nervous all of a sudden. For the past few days, Chen Yang was the only one who stayed with Chen An. Ivanov had his business to attend to, while Lu Feng was not finished with the reform in the Brothers Group yet. As for Ding Sheng, his holiday had ended, and he had to leave even though he was much reluctant to.
