Chapter 19: Sweet Glances

That morning, I had no idea that a pair of eyes had noticed me as Angelo and I getting off the jeepney.

"Have you checked yourself in the mirror before going out of your house?" bulong niya sa akin after we passed the entrance gate.

"Hindi. Nagmadali kasi akong nag-ayos, hindi na nga ako nakapag-make up. May morning glory ba ako?" Itinapat ko sa kanya ang mukha ko, sabay kurap ng mga mata ko. I even wipe my eyes using my index finger.

"M-may dalawa kang chikinini sa leeg." Naiilang niyang sabi sabay tingin sa paligid namin.

My eyes widened! Nataranta ako at mabilis ang kamay kong hinanap ang compact mirror sa bag at tiningnan ang repleksiyon ko roon. "Shit! Mauna na ako, ha?" Hindi ko na hinintay ang sagot niya. Naglakad ako ng mabilis habang nakatakip ang kanang kamay ko sa leeg ko. Then I passed the parking lot where Professor McConaughey's car had just stopped.

"What's going on?" He asked, smirking. Nakatingin siya sa kamay kong nakahawak sa leeg ko. "Don't cover it," pang-aasar niya. He's rubbing the back of his index finger across his lips, hiding his smile, and his blue eyes have a playful glint to them.

Inis ko siyang inirapan at pulang-pula akong tumakbo papunta sa ladies room. Fortunately, no one was inside. ""Hugh!" I clenched my teeth and covered the heart-shaped hickeys he had marked on me. Natigilan ako habang tinatakpan ko iyon ng concealer dahil naalala ko na naman kung gaano niya ako pinaligaya kagabi at kaninang umaga.

Then I received a message and I opened it.

From: Unknown Number
The third mark is placed where your heart pumps.

Ugh! Tagos hanggang intestines ang kilig na nararamdaman ko. Pero natigilan ulit ako. Where did he get my phone number?

"Wake up, dreamy girl!" I slightly slapped my face in front of the mirror, but I can't get the butterflies out of my stomach. I tried to calm and fix myself before heading to our classroom. When I went inside, he wasn't yet there.

"Did you use any protection?" Angelo muttered as I sat beside him.

Lumaki ang mga mata ko sabay iling. "Walang nangyari," bulong ko pabalik. Angelo is now one of my confidantes. I can confide in him about my personal matters, knowing that he will not reveal them to others. Noong mga araw na iniiwasan ko si Professor, siya palagi ang kasama ko. I could tell he is a sincere friend. Pero siyempre, I'm not going to tell him I'm having a discreet relationship with our Professor.

Tumango siya at pakiramdam ko ay naniniwala siya base sa reaksiyon niya. "Tuloy tayo mamaya?"

"Yep. I already called my mom. Dalhin daw kita roon sabi niya kahapon."

He sat up straight, and I could tell he was nervous.

"Don't think too much, madali lang naman ang trabaho roon. But my mother is very particular about quality service, so you must adhere to her rules."

Tumango siya habang hawak ang libro namin sa Economics, halatang tensiyonado. Tinapik ko nang marahan ang likod niya para palakasin ang loob niya. "Matatanggap ka roon, think positive."

He just nodded. Then nag-announce ang blockmate naming nakaupo malapit sa pinto na parating na si Professor.

I observe Professor McConaughey enter the classroom, his satchel bag slung over his shoulder. He slid his bag over his chair and pulled out his journal, then made a serious face and began calling out our names, and when he called mine, we exchanged glances.

Napayuko ako dahil parang kiniliti ang loob ko. He made us copy his notes on the blackboard and roamed around to checked to see if we were really copying. He came to a halt beside me and leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. Because of the tension between us, I tightly closed my eyes. Then I felt that he slid a small note on my desk. Agad ko iyong pinulot at binasa habang nakatago sa kamay ko. "You look better than the rays of sunshine, My beautiful Skye." And it had his first initial at the bottom. I couldn't contain my happiness. Lihim akong sumigaw sa utak ko. Agad kong itinago iyon habang lumilinga sa paligid. But they are all busy copying kaya nakahinga ako ng maluwag.

After we finished copying, Lorna, one of my blockmates presented herself to erase the blackboard.

"No, thanks. I'll do it," tanggi ni Professor ngunit nakuha na ni Lorna ang eraser kaya wala nang nagawa si Professor. She was thrilled to be erasing the blackboard, causing the chalk dust to fly in the direction of Professor. I secretly gasped when he quickly pulled his handkerchief from his pocket!

That handkerchief! He made use of it for my come! And now I see him sniffing it. He caught me looking at him and smirked. I focus my attention on my notes para iwasan ang mga tingin niya. "Oh, Hugh! He gave us an assignment and we exchanged sweet glances before he left the class. Wala ang propesor namin sa pangalawang subject kaya sumama ako sa mga kaibigan ko papuntang library. We read for the topic that the absent professor is supposed to be discussing. Ipapasa namin ang summary niyon sa email niya pagkatapos naming magbasa.

"Manonood kami ng sine mamaya, sama ka?" tanong sa akin ni Marie Jane nang nasa cafeteria na kami. Evening classes have ended, and it is time to go home pero mas pinili naming maghang-out muna.

"Sasamahan ko si Angelo sa restobar namin," sagot ko pagkatapos kong sumipsip sa hawak kong pineapple juice.

Umangat ang kilay ng katapat ko, may malisya sa titig niya. "Kayo na ba? He's attractive, but I don't think you'll fall for a guy like him, Skye. You have to set high standards, sayang ang ganda mo," Cattleya said sarcastically.

"Ikaw ang bahala. Poor men like him are users," Penelope said.

"We're just friends and I am helping him. Wala namang masama roon, di ba?" He's a good guy, ramdam ko iyon. He never gave me any bad vibes while I was with him. He shows genuine concern for me every time he spends time with me.

"He will just take advantage of your kindness. Baka ikaw pa ang nagbabayad tuwing sumasabay ka sa kanya. My God, Skye! Mag-isip ka," Marie Jane said.

Hindi ko na nakayanan ang naririnig ko, I gathered my workbooks and shoulder bag and stormed away from them. I could hear them calling out my name, but I didn't respond.

Hinanap ko na lang si Angelo and I noticed him sitting on a bench under the kaimito tree. When he looked at me, he had a genuine smile on his face. Contrary to what my friends are saying, this guy does not like me. I believe he is only interested in our pure friendship.

"Sana matanggap ako sa trabaho," he had a nervous smile upon entering our restobar.

"You will, kanina ka pa nag-ooverthink diyan. Wait ka lang dito at pupuntahan ko si Mommy." I tapped him on the shoulder and motioned for him to take a seat at the reserved table. Tinawag ko rin ang isa sa mga server na asikasuhin si Angelo bago ko sila iniwan. I entered the kitchen, where Mom was working as usual. She is preparing food for the customers' orders. Nagliwanag agad ang pagod niyang mukha, pagkakita niya sa akin.

"Nariyan na ang kaibigan mo?" tanong niya habang isinasalang sa mantika ang tinadtad na luya, isinunod niya ang mga crabs matapos iyong magkulay golden brown.

"He's waiting outside."

"What are you waiting for? Ipa-orient mo kay Jen para makapagsimula na kaagad siya bukas."

When I heard it, my heart almost leapt with joy. I kissed her on the cheek na ikinatawa niya. "Thank you, mom! You will like him, he's masipag." I said this as I walked out of the kitchen.

I then informed Jen to orient Angelo in accordance with my mom's instructions. Niyakap ako ni Angelo marahil ay dahil sa tuwa nang sabihin kong tanggap na siya.

"Pasensiya na, nadala lang ako," agad na hingi niya ng paumanhin. "Salamat talaga!"

And I didn't notice that a pair of eyes was watching me again that night.
