"It sure is great you were there to help us get out of that desert," Katara said.
"Yeah, I'm just sorry I couldn't get there earlier, and save your Sky Bison," I said. We walked through the crowds of refugees, getting in line to ride the ferry into Ba Sing Se. I rubbed my wrist under the band, which was already tightening. "But if he's anywhere it has to be here."
"Next!" We walked up. The lady running the stand rolled her eyes. "Great, it's you, just go on in."
We walked past, over to the ship for the line. "What was that about?"
"The Elves and the Earth Kingdom have a peace treaty allowing for free travel in their lands for both species. And anyone else traveling with them. Makes it really easy to get around."
"What about the other nations?" Sokka asked.
"Eh, nothing as far as I know. This one was only made because of the war and refugees. We supply safe passage to our lands, and supplies back. They allow us anywhere we want."
"Don't all refugees go to Ba Sing Se though?"
"You'd think that, but apparently not." We got on the boat. Everyone else got situated, leaving me and the blind girl, Toph.
"Listen here elf girl-"
"Y/n."
"Whatever. You may have them fooled, but you don't have me. I know something's up, and I'm keeping a foot on you."
"I- what?" She walked away before I could ask her what she meant.
"Don't worry about her, she doesn't trust people a lot. But if you really were bad she would've found out by now," Sokka said. Let's hope that held up.
We arrived in the city over night. The boat ride was surprisingly long, then again we left pretty late. Aang went above the city to try and find his bison. Katara and Sokka went to find the Earth King. Leaving Toph and I.
"Look I-"
"Save it. After we find Appa we're going our separate ways. You can go back to Xadia, and we can finish fighting this war."
"Yeah that was kind of the point." Toph didn't say anything else and walked away. I had no choice but to follow her.
Aang landed in front of us. "Toph, Y/n, I need you to get Katara and Sokka, meet me over at the wall."
"What, why?"
"There's a big Fire Nation drill heading towards the city." He opened his glider back up, ready to take off.
"I can't help you with that," I said
"What do you mean, you have to help." Aang faltered.
"She's right. If Xadia makes any sort of open attack on the Fire Nation, they'll take it as a reason to bring them into the war."
Chances are we're being brought in anyway. "I'm sorry Aang, but I really can't help you."
He sighed. "That's okay. It's important for you to stay out of this war." Aang jumped up and flew away.
I began walking away. Toph stopped me, grabbing my arm and revealing the ribbon, slowly bruising my wrist. "You and I are having a talk about this later."
Toph walked through the door, alone. "Where's everyone else?" I asked, sitting down and facing her.
"Getting a tour. Now start talking, you and I both know what that ribbon means, and I can feel it slowly cutting off your circulation."
I sat there, silently debating whether I should tell the truth. Up until now I hadn't mentioned anything that would require a lie, just in case.
"Well-"
"I'm supposed to kill the Fire Lord." I held up the wrist, bruising already visible under the ribbon.
I made my decision. My brothers life was worth more than anything.
"This contract is to kill the Fire Lord. If I don't Xadia falls. I thought I would get close to the Avatar, get a free ticket there."
"So why kill the Fire Lord anyway?"
"The Queen didn't want our safety to rely on the promise of a tyrannical man. Take the head off a dragon before it starts breathing fire." I cringed internally, what a stupid thing to say. But I needed their trust, and I needed to be convincing. No matter how many stupid quotes it took.
She hummed. "Well you're telling the truth. But you still have to tell everyone about your plan." Toph walked out of the room, not saying anything else.
