Chapter 9

When our lips touched, it felt as if nothing else in the world existed. It was just us, and nothing else mattered. I wouldâve been content if we were just left like that forever, but of course that wasnât the case. All too soon Gallyâs echoing voice reached my ears as he searched the deadheads, calling out my name. I sighed and pulled back hesitantly, reluctant to be the one to break the moment apart.

âI have to go.â I didnât know how to react, I couldnât remember being in a situation like this before, it was all new to me. I stood up and began walking away quickly towards Gallyâs voice. Suddenly I felt a hand on my arm, pulling me backwards. And then I was wrapped up in Newtâs warm arms and his lips were once more pressed against mine. This time I couldnât force myself to pull away, and it wasnât until Gallyâs voice grew significantly closer, Newt gently pulled away. âYou should go see what he wants.â He whispered. I nodded slowly, my brain still trying to process what was happening. He leaned in and pecked my lips once more, and then he was gone.

âSage?â I heard the rustling of branches from behind me, and I turned around to see a slightly out of breath Gally. âAre you okay?â he rushed towards me and hugged me quickly. I nodded as he continued â Alby threw Reagan, the boy who attacked you, into the pit. He called a Keepers meeting to decide if we banish him or not.

I had so many questions running through my brain I couldnât think straight so I nodded and followed him back out of the deadheads.

Gally led me to where i assumed everyone slept. there were hammocks strung up every which way, at varying heights, and a small fragile looking roof hanging over them all. Apparently the bonfire had fallen apart fairly quickly after I left because most of the hammocks were filled the boys were all eagerly taking amongst themselves. At least they were, when I came closer, the chatter died down almost immediately and they all stared at me, making me feel self conscious, but I held my head high and stared at them opened eyed until they were forced to drop their gazes down. We weaved in and out between the hammocks until we reached the back section separated from the rest where the hammocks were more spread out, and all empty

âThis is your hammock.â Gally pointed to one of them. âThis is where most of the keepers sleep. my hammock is over there.â he pointed to the hammock closest to the other section. âNow Minhoâs is right hereâ He gestured to the hammock closest to mine. âthe these are Winstonâs, Clintâs, and Newtâsâ he pointed to the next 3 closest. âTheyâre all good guys, theyâll make sure none of the other

boys bother you.â

I nodded âThanks Gallyâ

âYea anytime, Iâve got to get to the gathering, you should get some rest tomorrow is going to be a busy day for you.â

He left, leaving me all alone again.

I couldnât sleep that night. My mind was spinning and all I could think about was Newt. And the kiss, well kisses actually, that we had shared in the deadheads. How soft his lips were, and how much I had enjoyed being so close to him. If I had my way I would do that everyday for as long as I lived, and there was no way I would ever grow tired of it.

I mustâve drifted off to sleep at some point because I was woken all too soon by a cold hand pressing itself against my mouth. My eyes immediately snapped opened. Alby stood above me with his finger pressed against his lips, warning me to be quiet. He pulled his hand away and gestured for me to follow him.

We walked in silence to the edge of the Glade. We came to a stop in front of the wall, a little ways from the nearest door. The wall was covered in dozens of names, some crossed out, others not. I mouthed the names silently to myself as I read them âNick, Jeff, Alby, Gally, Frypan, Newt, Reagan, Winston, Clint, Jakob, Noah, Sam, Michael, Liam, Luke-â Alby cut me off by placing a knife in my hand

âYouâre one of us now.â I gripped the knife in my hand and turned towards the wall. I stood on my tiptoes to try and reach as high as I could, and slowly with a steady hand carved my name into the wall.â

Once I was finished I handed the knife back to Alby and he clapped me on the back âLetâs get you some breakfastâ

We made our way back to the kitchen, where the majority of gladers had woken up and were eating. Frypan served me up a plate of what looked like eggs and some sort of bacon. I couldnât find Gally, and assumed he was still sleeping, so when I saw Newt I immediately walked over and sat next to him. âMeet me in the deadheads, 5 minutes.â He whispered, not even making eye contact with me before he stood up and left.

âMorning Sage.â Minho sat down across from me and quickly began shoving food into his mouth.

âMorning.â I mumbled back half heartedly. My mind was spinning trying to figure out Newt. the five minutes passed agonizingly slow, and when they were done I sprang up from my seat and practically ran off to the deadheads.
