And so I sit, bathed in the moonlight that illuminates only my soul and leaves all else in the world draped in thick blankets of the cold and dark. It is only then that I truly feel the hollow thud of my lonely, pounding heart in its empty cage, surrounded by bars and slowly freezing sinew. Snow falls, then - covering the tops of my head and shoulders and hands and thighs, but no muscle of mine so much as twitches, and no sound is ripped from my throat. The cold surrounds me, envelops me, slowly muffling every distant nighttime sound, until all that's left is a hill covering an unbreathing body of ice. For this is my punishment. This is my penance.
