Why are we here, except to make material objects?
Our existence is mass-produced on the factory line,
And our schedules are scribbled on printer paper.
Our morals are made up by the old and prosperous,
Who have never been young and starving.
Our health is determined by our quantity of paper.
Phone calls; folk tales
Slow cookers; VCR tapes
Silk sheets; forever stamps
Night lights; spinning chairs
Undo button; graduation caps
Washing machines; orange juice
Telephone books; tape dispensers
Trading cards; mechanical keyboards
Why are we here, except to make material objects?
Our lives can be summarized by ones and zeroes,
And our identities dictated by the world's opinions.
Our passions change with the ebb and flow of fame,
And our self-worth is calculated not by ourselves.
Our tears come from plastic eye droppers.
Calculator buttons; painted canvases
Drawstring bags; moleskine books
Prescription drugs; spray bottles
Mechanical pencils; rain jackets
Podcast episodes; cell phones
Broom handles; paper towels
Sad emojis; YouTube videos
Radio static; dog collars
Why are we here, except to make material objects?
Our joy is supplied by the generosity of the rich,
And our sadness is supplied by the very same.
Our progress is measured by the feats of gods,
And our stomachs digest foods made by metal.
Our lives are run by men who view us as profit.
Post offices; fried chicken
Flower gardens; rain boots
Word counts; encrypted data
Water bottles; mental hospitals
Printed magazines; machine guns
Elementary schools; movie theaters
