Poem: Missing Step

You know
The feeling
When you miss a step
On the stairs

That first drop
On the rollercoaster
Hurtling down
Down
Down

When you wake up
Suddenly
With the startling feeling
Of falling

When you hear something
Learn something
Something
Unexpected
Heart wrenching
Nauseating
Confusing
Frightening

When something happens
Without warning

Something big
Life changing
Pulling the rug out
From beneath your feet
Toppling your vision
Of reality

Time seems to slow
The world halts
Breaths are held
Hearts stop
Trains of thought
Dissipate

Wisps
Ghosts
Vanished
Trailing off
Into the sky
Smoke

It's a gunshot
Loud
Violent
Shattering

And the ringing
Goes on for days
Sometimes
You can ignore it
It becomes
The new silence

Sometimes
It's unbearably loud
It pounds
Thundering
From all sides
A war of noise
Unstoppable
Teeth clenching
Eyes squeezing shut
Tears falling to the ground
Fists tightening

And then
It's silent

You know
The feeling
When you miss a step
On the stairs
