Definition of "pertaining":
(v.) be appropriate, related, or applicable.
In other words, it means relating to the sky, or celestial, or formed/made from pure fire or light.
I'm sure you can find a way to include empyrean in your fantasy writing vocab. It's probably most useful to those writing fantasy or sci-fi or something like that.
Examples:
The crackling energy in the globe looked empyrean, giving the impression of being created of pure fire or light.
