"Please stay safe dad," I said, moving to hug my father.
"I will, princess. Don't worry about me," dad said, wrapping his strong arms around me.
"See you later," mom said, kissing dad's lips when he pulled away from me.
"I'm gonna go find Carl," I said.
"I think he's gardening with Rick and grandpa," mom said. I nodded and ran off to find Carl.
"Michonne's back!" Carl called to me as soon as he saw me. I nodded and Rick and Carl opened our gates. A few walkers got pushed back into some sharpened stick we made to trap them. Michonne road past on her horse, coming to a stop shortly behind us.
"We're glad to see you," Rick said. I took a hold of the horse Michonne had just climbed off.
"Glad to see you, too," Michonne nodded. "Somebody hit the jackpot."
"Ooh, ooh, What'cha get?" I asked, jumping up and down like a toddler. The three laughed at my excitement.
"Well, I got you this," Michonne handed me a bracelet. "Sorry, I'm a little late on your birthday gift."
"It's alright! You didn't need to get me anything anyway," I said with a smile. She returned my smile as I placed the bracelet on my wrist, attempting to clasp it.
"Here, need some help?" Rick asked, helping me clasp my bracelet. I mumbled a thanks.
"And I got you two this to share," Michonne pulled out a stack of comic books.
"No way! Awesome! Thank you!" Carl laughed, taking the stack from Michonne.
"I get to read them when you're done," Michonne said with a smirk.
"Fair enough," I said. Michonne turned to Rick.
"And I found this." Michonne handed Rick an electric shaver. "Yur face is losing the war."
"Come on, Carl. Let's go tie up this girl," I said, gently petting the horse. I waved at everybody who drove past us. Daryl nodded at me and dad waved at me. Sasha and Bob acknowledged me with a smile. I led her to the small stable we had built. Carl took off her saddle and placed it on one of the wooden beams. I let the horse walk into the stable on her own.
"Going to check the snares?" Carl asked, looking behind me.
"I am," Rick nodded with a frustrated tone. "You're not." I opened my mouth but Rick beat me to it. "You're not either. Do your chores. Read some comics together. Maybe some books, too. Hang out with Patrick. Maybe go to storytime."
"Dad, that's for kids," Carl scoffed lightly.
"Rori goes. You should go, too," Rick said.
"I go sometimes," I corrected. I grabbed a brush Michonne had found and began to brush the horse.
"Not helping," Rick mumbled to me.
"What a party pooper," I mumbled to Carl.
"No kidding," Carl chuckled. I finished gently brushing the horse and Carl suggested we go on a walk. I agreed. We saw some kids pointing and laughing at the walkers. I tried to pull Carl away but he shrugged me off.
"Carl, leave them," I pleaded. They were just kids. Why couldn't he let them be?
"This one's Wayne," the little boy laughed.
"Nick. Nick, over here!" Said the oldest girl.
"Hi, Nick!" The other blonde girl by the oldest girl waved at the walkers.
"You're naming them?" Carl asked rudely.
"Well, one of them has a name tag so we thought all of them should," The blonde, who I realized was Mika, explained innocently.
"They had names when they were alive. They're dead now," Carl said.
"Carl," I hissed, smacking his arms. "Look, I think it's nice you want to consider their feeling but Carl's right. You shouldn't name all of them. Those, uh, dead people don't really care."
"They're not dead. They're just different," Lizzie shrugged.
"What the hell are you talking about? Okay, they don't talk. They don't think. They eat people," Carl snapped.
"Carl, stop it! Look, kids, let's just not name them at all. Trust me, they won't mind if you don't name them," I tried to reason but Carl ignored me.
"They kill people."
"People kill people. They still have names," Lizzie shrugged like it was nothing. I ran my hand through my hair, not really knowing how to kindly drill into Lizzie's heads that these walkers didn't care. That they wanted to kill her.
"Have you seen what happens? Have you seen someone die like that?" Carl asked. I glared at him with wide eyes.
"Yeah, I have," Lizzie responded, sounding close to crying.
"They're not people and they're not pets. Don't name them," Carl said.
"We're supposed to go read. Come on," Lizzie pulled the rest of the kids with her, away from me and Carl.
"Carl, you could've said that nicer!" I hissed with a glare.
"They shouldn't be naming them! It stupid!" Carl argued.
"Carl, they're children! Kids! They don't know better! Sure, they need to learn but you can't say it like that!" I said.
"What's it matter? Maybe now they'll stop naming those walkers," Carl said.
"That's not the point. You just crushed those poor children. Triggered memories they didn't want to remember. You can't do that."
"Okay, I'm sorry. Jeez," Carl huffed, putting his hands up.
"Thank you but I'm not the one you should say sorry to. Just, don't do it again," I said, gently patting Carl's shoulder. "I'm gonna go see what mom's up to. I'll see you later?"
"Yeah," Carl nodded. I smiled and walked away, hoping he would consider the words I just said.
