Author's notes:

~Hello everyone~
This is my first fic. Please excuse any spelling/grammatical errors as English is not my first language.
This story follows an alternative perspective to the canon storyline. There will be spoilers and specific scenes throughout the story, so please pay attention to that if you're not up to date with the anime/manga. Also, there will be some minor modifications to the story (e.g. they have showers).
This chapter might be a little bit slow, since we're just setting the story up, but things really pick up from the next one, I promise!
Please let me know what you think in the comments.
I really hope you'll enjoy it!

Whoever wrote this sign must have some sick sense of humor, you thought, eyes staring at the display panel in the center of Trost. It isn't the first time you see this type of recruiting sign, however it's the first time you see something like that from the Scouts. They must be really low in medically trained soldiers, probably people were not exactly vying to join them, if they can resort to civilians enlisting. That, or they were already gone. The Scouting Regiment's death reports rather supporting the latter.

The loud sound of the town's bell rings in your ears, while your eyes are still trained on that piece of paper, like it's a damn horse with wings. It's still early morning, you have one more hour until you need to open your practice for the day. That's one of the perks of having your own surgery and being your own boss, you decide when you get to work and when you get off. But you still need to get it ready, so why are you still wasting your time like this when you should be preparing to receive your patients for the day?

Truth is, you know very well why you're still staring at this sign. Any time the Scouts are mentioned anywhere, something tugs at your heart. It's not pity for them for dying in such high numbers, nor is it anger for wasting your tax money like the town folks say or even admiration like the kids acclaim. No, it's something far much deeper. Far much darker. Yet you don't know what it is, you've never had and you'll probably never find out either. Finding out now they're looking for doctors, its roots only deepen inside of you. And you could almost answer their call. After all, you are also a doctor. A surgeon even. And you've healed many scouts in the past. Well, the ones who still had enough body parts left to be healed and stay alive. So you're certainly specialized in trauma medicine. Are you seriously considering this now?
