Chapter 42: Shattered

"Natasha you better start talking right now" Mara gritted through her teeth. Natasha realised the two women were talking about different things and mentally slapped herself across the face.

She sighed and took a seat on the edge of their bed. She motioned for Mara to sit next to her, but she refused and remained standing.

"A week after you left I was a complete mess." Natasha said. "I missed you so much and it just became really lonely. I just wanted to feel close to someone and Steve was really nice to me."

"You made out with Steve? Of all people?!" Maya yelled. She was so mad at this point that she didn't even manage to connect those dots herself. Her girlfriend and best friend started something behind her back. "How could you?" She said as tears threatened to spill. 

The first person she ever loved has shattered the heart Mara had given her.

"I don't know what came over me. It was purely physical and meant nothing to me." Natasha tried to lessen the damage that was already done. "Did it mean nothing to Steve too?" Mara asked.

Natasha looked down, which was enough of an answer for Mara. "I knew he liked you, you know. But I always accepted that since I knew you chose me. Now I'm not so sure anymore." Mara said. Natasha was crying at this point.

"What did you two do?" She really didn't want to know but had to ask.

"We didn't have sex.." Mara scoffed at the pathetic answer. "What did you do Natasha?!"

"We kissed and did other stuff..." she said still looking down to the ground.

Mara was crying at this point, not caring anymore about controlling her emotions. "Let me get this straight. While I was on the other side of the world completely alone and fighting for freedom of my own mind to be the best version for you, you were out here cheating on me with my best friend?"

Natasha did not say anything, she was just crying and realising that she probably destroyed their relationship. Mara nodded to herself and walked towards the door. "Oh, and by the way, you can stop questioning Whitehall. He told me what happened to my parents."

Before Mara could shut the door, FRIDAY told them that Fury wants to see them in the conference room. Mara quickly made eye contact with Natasha and shut the door, making her way to the conference room. Natasha was still sitting on the bed, processing everything that had just happened with sobs escaping her lips.

'Great fucking timing' she thought. As she walked in, Steve was already there along with Wanda and Vision, who Mara hadn't seen in a long time. She smiled at the two and sat next to them, avoiding Steve at all cost.

Soon after, Natasha walked in and sat down on the other side of the table next to Steve, looking in Mara's direction. Mara felt her stare but ignored the redhead completely as Fury walked in and started talking.

"We have an urgent mission for which you will attack a Hydra base in Missouri. Your files are in front of you, so suit up. You have 10 minutes to get your asses on a jet." And with that, he walked out again.

Mara quickly got up from her chair and went straight to her room to put on her suit. She was really looking forward to kicking some ass right about now.
