the night the stars fell

when i die i wish to be stardust. to be immortalized in flame. joining the constellations hoping to be remembered as something more beautiful than human.
but the stars fell that night
and the sky was empty. the moon shied away. and it was quiet

the stars fell that night
and it wasn't about me
i am not the sun
nothing revolves around me
on earth im as common as sand
the stars are not there for me
nor do they care how much i love them

im jealous of their problems
each star stuck in a stalemate with the next
trying to be the brightest
but they don't compete with the sun
they've never seen how easily he overshadows the moon
nor his aggression as he beats down on the people of earth

they only know the moon—kind mother of the sky
she derives her light from the sun. and though each star makes their own light she shares the attention of the sky.
she doesn't hoard the beauty of light.
in an earth full of suns i long for a moon to guide me.
rock bottom wouldn't be as dark with company from the blissfully ignorant stars

but the stars have fallen today
and their mother is nowhere to be seen
and i am in my bed
staring at the night sky
wishing to be a star too
