Lorelei

Another day, another workload. It seems stressful but I love my job as a journalist. I sat down on my swivel chair then took my laptop and opened it. While I was busy reviewing my article, my workmate called me, I shifted my gaze and looked at her while she's walking to my direction.

She handed a black box to me, "Para sa 'yo"

Kinuha ko iyon sa kaniya at sinuri ang paligid, "Kanino galing?" I asked, there's no names on whom it came from, tanging pangalan ko lang ang nakasulat sa isang maliit na papel na nakadikit sa takip ng box.

"Based on what the guard said, a man in black hoodie left that outside, basta na lang daw nilapag nang walang pasabi at umalis na agad. Akala nga niya ay basura pero nabasa niya ang pangalan mo sa box kaya pinasabay na niya sa 'kin para ibigay sa 'yo" paliwanag niya. Tumango na lang ako at nagpasalamat sa kaniya.

The box is not that heavy so I think there's no bomb or any explosive device inside. I tried to shake it but I can't hear any sound, it's like there's nothing inside. Binuksan ko iyon at nagulat sa laman nito, limang buto ng orange fruit ang nakadikit sa loob ng box. I know what these seeds mean, it means danger. Someone is threatening me, it might be one of the people I exposed through my articles.

Death threat is not that surprising to me, I always receive one and I'm kinda used to it. Fortunately and thankfully, wala pa namang nangyayari sa akin but this one, I can't just ignore this kind of threat. I knew someone who also receives this kind of package and they really experienced being in danger.

I tried to brush it off and focus on the article that I'm reading but I still kept on thinking of what might happen to me in the next few hours. I sighed then drink my coffee to calm myself but I think it was a wrong move since the caffeine just makes me feel more nervous.

A few hours later, lumabas na ako para pumunta sa hotel kung saan i-interview-hin ko ang witness para sa news coverage ng isang murder case. I went inside my gray sedan. I fasten my seat belt then started the engine. Nagpatugtog ako para hindi mabagot habang nagda-drive.

It was already 4 p.m and 30-45 minutes pa bago ako makarating sa pupuntahan. The sun is setting at mamaya lang ay mag-gagabi na. While driving at an empty road napatingin ako sa gubat na lagi kong nadadaanan, it feels eerie and it makes me shiver whenever I pass through this woods. It's like someone is watching over me.

I screamed in shock when one of the tire of my car exploded, agad kong nailiko ang sasakyan at hininto. Napahawak ako sa dibdib dahil sa nerbiyos, huminga ako nang malalim saka lumabas ng sasakyan para tingnan ang pumutok na gulong.

I examined the tire but I don't have any clue why it suddenly explode. Thankfully, I have a spare tire and I know how to change it. I halted when I saw a black motor heading over my direction. I was about to ignore it but I saw the other man holding a gun and he's pointing it at me.

I screamed again when he shoot at my direction, yumuko ako para hindi ako matamaan, sunod-sunod na putok ang narinig ko na tumama sa likod ng kotse ko. I scanned the area, trying to find where I can hide or whom I can ask for help but the road we are right now, was in the middle of the woods.
