Pre-KlawWhile Tony got Klaw's exact location, the rest of us left to get ready. We were going to meet on the launch deck in an hour. After I was done putting my suit on, I went to my lab to grab a few extra skin sealants just in case.
"That bad?"
I turned my head to see Steve leaning against the door frame of my lab. He was already in his Captain America suit. I looked down at the extra canisters in my hand.
"Just in case something goes wrong." I told him and clipped them to my belt.
"You expecting something to go wrong?" He asked lightheartedly. I chuckled and looked over at him.
"Always, Captain." I told him. He gave a breathless laugh and looked down. "Hey," I said to get his attention again. I had traded my smile for a more serious look. When Steve looked back up, I continued. "Why didn't you pick up Thor's hammer?" I asked. I had always been curious.
"I don't know what you mean." Steve said way too quickly. I sighed and gave him a look that told him I knew he was lying.
"The magic placed on Mjölnir let's anyone worthy of ruling Asgard to pick it up. You can't be half worthy, or almost worthy. You're either worthy, or you're not. There is no in between." I explained.
"So?" Steve said.
"So... the hammer shifted when you pulled at it. Which means, you realized you could pick it up and you stopped trying." I told him.
"I hate that you know everything." Steve sighed. "I... don't know" he finally said. "Just didn't feel right."
"You don't feel worthy." I figured out.
"Maybe not." He agreed. "You can lift it, though." Steve told me with a small teasing smile. I rolled my eyes with an annoyed hum. "Do you not feel worthy?"
"I know I'm not worthy." I scoffed. "Do you know how many awful things I let happen? Things I could stop in a second?"
"That's not your decision to make." Steve interrupted. "It not fair for you to change our futures. That's our job, not yours."
"But, I am changing it." I insisted. "Just being here is changing things. And then there's Loki, who's supposed to be on Asgard-"
"Did any of those changes effect the outcome? Or future events?" Steve asked.
"So far? No, but I'm planning on changing something significant." I told him. "Some things in the last few movies have to change." I stated.
"What outcome saves the most people?" Steve questioned I looked up at him from where I was staring at the floor. "Always go with that option."
"And, what if I can't do it?" I asked with tears starting to cloud my vision. Steve didn't respond, he just walked over to me and put his arms around me.
"We do the best we can with the information we have." He told me. "But, for what it's worth, we all believe in you."
At his words, I finally snapped and clung to his suit while I cried. Steve just held me to him and rubbed my back, letting me cry. After a minute, I calmed down and pulled back to wipe away my tears.
"Sorry I cried on you." I laughed out of embarrassment.
"Anytime," Steve told me with a genuine smile. "It's about time to go. Are you sure you're up for this?"
"Yeah, I'm sure." I nodded.
"Good, I'll see you up there, then." Steve said and patted me on the back one last time before leaving.
