Agent X gripped the doorknob tightly in nervousness

Agent X gripped the doorknob tightly in nervousness. His knuckles turned white from the force with which he held it, too far gone in his nerves to notice.

He didn't move from this position, to let the person on the other side of the door know that he was there. He wouldn't let her know of his presence till their designated rendezvous.

His watch beeped and startled him. He took a deep breath, fixed his wavy black hair and finally released the death grip he had on the door. He knocked on it three times, as was mandated, and waited for a reply.

A faint 'come in,' was heard from the other side, and he briskly opened the door and stepped in.

In a moment he was transformed. No longer a nervous guy waiting on the news he had mixed feelings about; he was now the Agent X everyone knew - Mysterious, calm, and fully in control of himself. This was the image he displayed, and it would stay that way no matter how choppy the waves were on the inside.

This was the Agent X that presented itself to Tasker when she looked up to see him. She gave a slight smile and gestured for him to take a seat in front of her.

A large spyglass and a gun emblem decorated the wall behind Tasker, the words 'Security Hazard Agency of Defense and Espionage' inscribed below in bold letters. Agent X surveyed the room, the office tidy as always. Moving, he took a seat on the edge of the chair Tasker had gestured to.

"Relax X, there's no need to be nervous," Tasker said, hoping to break his nervous habit but knowing that it'd fail like it always had.

"So, the mission you've been anticipating for so long is here. Excited?" she prodded with a gentle gaze. X's eyes flickered with emotion even he couldn't place, and he just conceded to the statement with a small nod.

Tasker waited for a second then continued. "You're the operative who's going to infiltrate ACE and rescue hostages trapped there by them. We've also received reports and scans that they have stored a deadly weapon there as well. I want you to take that weapon into consideration and retrieve it as well."

X nodded pensively, the only sign from him that he'd heard and understood her. However, that wasn't the only news she had to deliver to him.

"X, this mission is fraught with peril and there are great chances of capture. If that is to happen, we will only be granted one chance to rescue you. And if that rescue mission is to fail, then all records of you will be erased and we will pretend as if you never existed."

X nodded again, with a slight gulp this time. He knew all of this, but this mission also had great credibility to it if he succeeded. On top of that, he had a stubborn streak to him that forced him, as if he were possessed, to accept harder tasks.

It wasn't a surprise to either of them when he readily agreed to the mission. Tasker stared at him intensely, making sure that he wouldn't reconsider at the last moment; a pointless exercise. Once Agent X accepted a mission, he would see it through. No matter what risks were associated with it.
