it's better than letting a drunk girl walk home in the cold, right?

"[y/n]? What are you doing?"

[y/n] turned herself around to look who had called her name, arms still wrapped around her body, not doing a great job at keeping her warm.

"Sugawara?" [y/n]'s eyes widened in surprise to see him, "I — um — I'm walking back to my hotel," she answered his question, unable to stop her stuttering.

Sugawara found himself walking a little closer to her, unconsciously checking her face for any lie or distress.
"By yourself? I thought you got in a car with your friends back at the bar," Sugawara questioned further, motioning behind him as if the bar was close behind (it wasn't).

"I — uh — got angry at at them and got out the car," [y/n] chucked a little, trying to find some humour in the situation as she swiped a hand over her face due to the embarrassment. She didn't seem to acknowledge that Sugawara had somehow knew she had gotten into a car with her friends but she knew he wasn't a creepy guy. She wasn't concerned.

"Do you have another way home? Is your hotel far?" Sugawara asked, not even trying to hide the worry in his voice. [y/n] let out a sad laugh.
"Well — you see — that's sort of the issue..." she trailed off and rubbed her arms, "I left my bag with my phone and key card for the hotel in the car..."
"That's not good," Sugawara frowned.
"Nope, it's not."

"I was planning to walk back and just hope Masahi was in his room by then and let me in his car to get my stuff back," [y/n] told Sugawara, realising just how much her plan was based on luck as she spoke. Masahi. That was the actors name, Sugawara had finally figured out.

"How far is your hotel?" Sugawara questioned once more.
"Like twenty minutes by car," [y/n] admitted, once again realising how stupid her plan was.

"Come back to mine," Sugawara blurted out without much thought. He hoped it was the alcohol talking but it probably wasn't. [y/n]'s eyes widened at his words which made Sugawara regret it almost immediately. "My apartment isn't to far from here," he tried to explain himself, a blush rushing to his cheeks, "it's better than letting a drunk girl walk home in the cold, right?" He stuttered out. [y/n] kept a blank expression, nodding her head as he spoke.

"Is it that obvious I'm drunk?" [y/n] groaned, not giving an answer to his offer just yet. Sugawara just laughed.
"Well I'm not exactly sober myself," he attempted to reassure her but in the end he just thought he sounded creepy, which made him mentally cringe. An awkward silence then began. [y/n] just stood swinging on her heals debating her options. She really didn't want to burden Sugawara — her ex — who she had lost touch with and hadn't actually had a proper conversation with in years. But he did offer...

"Won't your girlfriend be angry at you having some random girl over?" [y/n] asked. She wasn't particularly sure why she said this. If Sugawara had gotten a girlfriend Makoto probably wouldn't be able to keep her mouth shut if she knew, and she always knew. She just needed to confirm it and hear the satisfying words of "I don't have a girlfriend actually," leave his lips, which did in fact.
"I don't have a girlfriend at the moment," he said, rubbing his neck.
"Oh, okay," [y/n] said, hiding a smile. She cursed herself for acting like a childish school girl. She shouldn't be acting like this over an old high school boyfriend. What they had once upon a time was now gone and it had been four years. Don't act stupid, I don't care how drunk you are, she scolded herself.

"You really wouldn't mind?" She asked, still rubbing arms. The cold wind only seemed to get colder.
"Of course not," he smiled with a shrug, "come on, I'll lead the way." He walking over to her side and pulled off his jacket, motioning her to take it. [y/n]'s eyes shifted from the coat to Sugawara. "Take it, you're cold. I can last a ten minute walk, you need it more than me," he said, shaking the jacket in front of her face. [y/n] mumbled a soft thank you and placed the jacket on her shoulders, holding the jacket together across her chest with her dominant hand.

Sugawara found his eyes glancing at [y/n] as the two walked. It reminded him of high school, walking her home after practice in the hopes of getting her to cheer for his volleyball team. Everything seemed so complicated and important at the time but looking back on it as an adult made it seem so simple. He couldn't help but reminisce and he wondered if walking together like this brought back memories of those times for [y/n] too but he was far to awkward to mention anything about it. He'd rather walk in silence. A familiar pleasant silence, like the two had once had in high school.
