Background: ej and y/n have been dating for 2 years. Y/n and her family are fluent in French, and ej is trying to learn it for his French exam. Y/n is helping him study.

"salut mon amour," I said, welcoming ej into my home. He looked at me nervously and laughed as I said, "it means hello my love."

"Well salut mon amour to you too." He laughed, kissing me on the head, "thanks for helping me study y/n."

"à quoi servent les copines?" I smiled, he looked at me as if saying 'oh gosh, I'm screwed.' I translated it, "What are girlfriends for?" I grabbed his hand and led him upstairs to my bedroom. "alors qu'est-ce que tu apprends?" I asked.

"You'd think after dating you for so long I would know French better."

I laughed, "so what are you learning?"

"Oh, y/n. To be honest, I don't know. This is so hard."

I started quizzing ej and realized he didn't know a lot of it. I tried a different approach.

"How do you say 'music' ej?"

"I don't-" he said putting his hand on the back of his neck.

"You do know, ej. Music is musique. It's a cognate."

"Okay."

I tested him on a new word and went over all the previous words. I did this at each word. I think he was finally remembering.

"EJ, how would you say 'I love music'?"

"J-J'aime la musique?" He asked.

"Yes!! You got it!!" He would not have gotten that an hour ago.

The next day, ej texted me:
