RICKY FELT LIKE HE was about to die. His heart was pounding before he even got to the door, and now that he stood in front of it his hands were sweating too. If this feeling was to be compared to anything, Ricky was about to walk through the gates of hell. Otherwise known as his mom's apartment.

After he'd left his overnight stuff there, Lynne refused to post his things back. She insisted that if he was "brave enough to slam the door on his own mother" he could be "brave enough to come and face her, apologize and get his things himself." Of course, she hadn't taken the decency to call him and tell him all these things herself. His dad delivered the news to him two days before he had to get on what would be his last plane to Chicago.

The front door opened and, instead of his mother, Todd stood there with a smile. "Of course," Ricky mumbled.

"Hello to you too, Ricky." Todd stepped back, and the boy walked straight into the place. "Whoa...whoa."

Ricky sighed. "What?"

"No hello Todd? How are you? It's good to see you?" His mom's boyfriend closed the door before approaching him. He noticed that Ricky wasn't the slightest bit interested, looking around the room. Todd sighed, pointing in the other direction, "Your stuff is there."

Ricky walked up to it, and once he was clutching his travel bag, he realized that it was all he needed. And, he didn't have an excuse not to acknowledge Todd anymore without showing incessant rudeness.
