BY THE SIXTH WEEK of camp, the Wildcats were now fully initiated campers of Shallow Lake. After the spookiness Scavenger Hunt, the competitiveness Color War, the anticipation of Battle of the Bands, the chaos of Camp Prom, topped up with the familiarity that came with opening night, they felt like nothing could scare them. However, that was until they were lined up on the edge of the looming structure that was Dewey's Diving Tower. Down below, the water twinkled a warm blue in the afternoon light━it looked the least murky Marcus had ever seen it. He grinned in the faces of the uneasy theatre kids.
Gina, Nini, Jet and Maddox had all already jumped. Now, all who remained were the supervising CIT, Marcus, and the five scaredy-Wildcats.
"Do we have to jump from the very top?" Big Red was the first to express his fear. Kourtney and Ashlyn looked equally afraid, behind him. The East High kids stayed behind as more campers plummeted off the tower, splashing into the lake beneath them. "There are people jumping from lower..."
"Those people are babies. This is the tradition," Marcus said, smirking. He pointed below. "Everyone is already in. You won't even remember it once it's over. You guys are literally the last group. I promise, it's really not that far down."
"I heard echoes!" Carlos clung to Seb's shoulder, taking a peek into the lake.
"Look, guys, it's not that hard." Marcus grabbed Big Red, holding him to the edge. "Just look forward, think happy thoughts, and jump."
